The Phenomenom Of The Difficulties Of The Students In Translating Unfamiliar Words By Using Context Clues Technique At The Eighth Grade Of Smpn Satap 3 Bengo

This research aims to know the phenomenom of the students' difficulties and
students’ response to use context clues technique, especially, in translating unfamiliar
words. Data were collected on the eighth grade of the students in SMPN 3 Bengo.
The researcher taught twenty three students about context clues technique in five
meetings. The students’ difficultes were observed by the observation checklist during
teaching and learning process. The students’ responses were collected by the
interview section in the last meeting. The results of the data analysis showed that the
students had several difficulties, such as the difficulty in understanding context clues,
the difficulty in translating the meaning of words due to lack of vocabulary mastery
and the difficulty in guessing word classes. The results of students’ responses were
the positive responses. It was showed from they enjoyed the teaching and learning
process. They also suggested the context clues technique to be applied in the class.
. Conclusion
This research was aimed to know the students’ difficulties and students’
responses in translating unfamiliar word by using context clues technique at the
eighth grade of SMPN SATAP 3 Bengo.
Based on the findings of the research, the researcher concludes that most
students have difficulties in translating unfamiliar word by using context clues
technique. The students had difficulty to focus on the English learning process.
They had difficulty to understand the explanation of the context clues technique.
They had difficulty to use the types of the context clues technique even there
were the signal words. They had difficulty to guess the meaning of the unfamiliar
words through te context of the sentence. They had difficulty to guess the word
class of the unfamiliar words through the context clues technique.
The students also have the positive responses. Despite the many
difficulties that the students had, they said that they had enjoyed the learning
process. Then they also suggested the context clues technique to be applied in the
class. Although, they were able to focus on understand the explanation. But they
still remembered several of the types of context clues technique. They had the
different ways of understanding the context clues technique. So they preffered to
use a dictionary.
B. Suggestions
Based on the findings and discussions of the research, the researcher
proposes some suggestions as follow:
1. For English Teachers
English teachers are expected to provide regular training to students
in translating unfamiliar word by using context clues technique. This is
because there were still students who are quite low in their ability in
translating unfamiliar word through the context of the sentence. So this is
very necessary for the future so that students are able to produce good
scientific translate unfamiliar word without a dictionary and of course useful
for many people.
2. For Students
Students are advised to be more aware that translating unfamiliar
word by using unfamiliar word. We can see firsthand how people who have
scientific translate unfamiliar word in this era of globalization are very useful
and viewed.
