The Implementation of SQ3R Method in Increasing the Students’ Reading Ability

This thesis aimed to find out how the implementation of the SQ3R method
in increasing the students’ reading ability was according to students’ perspectives.
This research used qualitative method in analyzing the data. The participants were
5 students and 1 English Teacher of SMPN 4 Sibulue which selected through the
purposive sampling method. The instruments used were observation and interview,
and the pre activities of the research started through the observation to see the
classroom situation while the teacher implemented the SQ3R method. After that,
researcher needed to find the important step of the SQ3R method through the
interviews. Then, the post activities showed the students’ and the teacher’s
perceptions towards the implementation of the SQ3R method. Furthermore, the
implementation found were survey step with skimming the text through reading
the title and any important information about the text; question step with creating
question and to guide the reading; read step with reading and taking notes the
important information in the text in order to answer the question; recite step with
recall the information through the notes and answer all the questions; and review
step with conduct an overall review through what the students have read from the
text.. Findings indicate that the SQ3R method significantly enhances students'
reading abilities by promoting faster comprehension, making the reading process
more enjoyable and structured, and increasing student motivation. Each step of the
method contributes to improved reading scores and overall proficiency in text
comprehension. Additionally, student feedback highlights the method's
effectiveness in fostering engagement and success in reading, while also
addressing initial challenges faced by some students in adapting to the structured
method.
A. Conclusion
The data gained from the observation and the interview to find the
answer of “how is the implementation of SQ3R method in increasing the
students’ reading ability?” described that the implementation approved
increasing the students’ reading ability through the implementation of the
SQ3R method each steps.
The implementation were 1) Survey step: skim the text through
reading the title and any important information about the text; 2) Question
step: create question and gave them to the students to guide their reading; 3)
Read step: read and take notes the important information in the text in order
to answer the question; 4) Recite step: recall the information through the
notes and answer all the questions; and 5) Review step: conduct an overall
review through what the students have read from the text.
The implementation of the SQ3R method in increasing the students’
reading ability was implemented well according to the students’ perspectives
that stated could help the student to understand a text faster, made the reading
learning process enjoyable and directed, made the students were motivated to
learn reading, and increased the students’ reading scores and the students’
reading ability.
The implementation of the SQ3R method effectively enhances
students' reading abilities by facilitating faster comprehension, promoting an
enjoyable and structured learning experience, and increasing motivation.
Each step of the method (survey, question, read, recite, and review)
contributes to these outcomes, ultimately leading to improved reading scores
and overall proficiency in understanding texts. Students' positive perspectives
further reinforce the method's effectiveness in fostering engagement and
success in reading.
B. Suggestion
Based on the conclusion above, the researcher put some suggestion as
follows:
1. For Teacher
The teacher suggested overseeing the struggle that students faced
during the learning process to avoid misunderstanding about the SQ3R
method, and use it as one of the method in teaching reading.
2. For Students
The students should realize that learning reading and increasing
reading ability was important and enjoyable through the SQ3R method,
and other methods that related.
3. For the Future Researcher
For the Future researcher, it can be the references for research
about the implementation of the SQ3R method in increasing the students’
reading ability to see how the implementation was, the advantage and
disadvantage of the method to consider as the research object.
