Using English Comic Webtoon as a Media in Teaching Reading Comprehension to the students at SMPN 1 Dua Boccoe

This study aims to find out how students perceive using English comic
webtoon as a media in teaching reading comprehension to the students at SMPN 1
Dua Boccoe. The research method used is descriptive qualitative method; The
instruments used are observation, interviews and documentation. Sampling in this
research is using a purposive sampling technique, where the sampling technique is
the researcher conducts learning in class IX.B for two meetings as a form of
implementation of the use of English comic webtoon as a medium as well as the
researcher observing students during the implementation process. Conducted and the
researcher also conducted an interview process to 8 students who were randomly
selected. Based on the results of the study, the use of English comic webtoons as a
medium for learning students' reading comprehension has been able to make students
understand reading quickly and students also accept positively this application is
applied in schools. It can be seen from the assignments given by the researchers to the
students that they did the assignments well (the tasks mentioned have been attached
by the researcher in the appendix).
A. Conclusion
Based on the results and discussion presented in the previous chapter,
researchers can draw conclusions about using English comic webtoon as a media in
teaching reading comprehension to the students at SMPN 1 Dua Boccoe, that the use
of English comic webtoon as a medium good enough to be applied in learning
reading comprehension in class because by using this media, students can more easily
understand reading well. In addition, using this media also makes the learning
atmosphere more fun and not boring.
1. Implementation
The use of English comic webtoons as a learning media certainly has
advantages or advantages, namely making students more active and enthusiastic in
participating in learning, can make students understand reading faster, and of course
it can be accessed anytime and anywhere so that students can learn English without
having to do it at school or in class. It's just that using this media also definitely has a
weakness, namely it is easy to distract students and get them out of the topics
discussed such as playing games, opening social media and others. In addition, in the
webtoon there are also stories that are not allowed to be read by children under the
age of 14. So here, students must be smarter to sort out the types of reading that are
suitable for reading and also used as learning materials.
2. Students’ Perception
Students' perceptions of using English comic webtoon as a media in teaching
reading comprehension to the students at SMPN 1 Dua Boccoe based on the results of
interviews with students, which shows that the use of the media has a positive
perception given by students. Students like learning English, especially in learning
reading comprehension by using English comic webtoon as a medium.
B. Suggestion
To improve teaching and learning activities, the researcher eventually wants to
offer some suggestions to those involved in English education as follows:
1. For Teachers
The teacher must use various media which will make the students more
motivated in learning something. One of the media is Using webtoon comic. It
shows that the researcher uses Webtoon comic to make students feel interested,
motivated and enjoy learning reading texts.
2. For Students
The researcher suggests the students when they studied English subjects,
especially in reading comprehension section either at school or home can apply
English ciomic webtoon as a media because this media can practice easily and
also easy to acces
3. For Other Researchers
The researcher hopes that there will be other researhers who will conduct this
kind of research which still related to this research. They may conduct at the same
level or different levels with different subjects or media to teach reading
comprehension.
