The Influence of Lecturer‟s Personality toward the Students‟ Speaking English at the Fourth Semester of IAIN Bone

This study aims to investigate the influence of lecturer‟s personality toward
the students‟ speaking English at the fourth semester. The researcher applied a
qualitative research. One lecturer was chosen as the research participant through
purposive sampling technique and 10 students at the 4 th semester of English education
study program were involved as the informants. The data were obtained through
observation and interview and analyzed based on procedures of data analysis that
consists of data reduction, data display, and conclusion. The result of the findings
indicates that; (1) the types of personality traits possessed by the lecturer are
including all the Big Five personality types (Extraversion, Agreeableness,
Conscientiousness, Emotional Stability, and Openness) but Extraversion personality
is the most dominant personality that shown by the lecturer and (2) the influence of
lecturer‟s personality toward the students‟ speaking is students become brave,
confident, comfortable, and more motivated in speaking English.
A. Conclusion
Based on the analysis had conducted in the research, the researcher concluded
the result of the research in this chapter. This research is to find how the influence of
lecturer‟s personality toward the students‟ speaking English. In this research, the
subject of the research was the Critical Speaking subject lecturer at IAIN Bone.
Based on the research findings, the lecturer shown five types of personality which
categorized in “The Big Five” personality types. Those were extraversion,
agreeableness, conscientiousness, emotional stability, and openness personality. The
most dominant personality that was shown by the lecturer is Extraversion personality.
The students revealed that those lecturer‟s personalities gave influences toward their
speaking skill. The students became brave and confident in speaking English. They
felt comfortable in learning because of the extraversion and emotional stability
personality of the lecturer. The lecturer‟s agreeableness personality gave a motivation
to students to be better in speaking English. The conscientiousness and openness
personality of the lecturer also influenced the improvement of the students in
speaking.
B. Suggestion
The conclusion showed that there are several types of personality of the
lecturer in teaching critical speaking subject. The researcher also found some factors
that could influence the students‟ speaking English. For that reasons, there are some
suggestions that are given by the researcher:
1. The speaking lecturers or teachers should be more pay attention on their
personality because it can influence students‟ learning. The speaking
lecturers/teachers should be more aware of their personality in teaching in order to
create a good learning environment for students.
2. For the next researcher who will conduct the current topic, it is suggested to do
deeper to analyze about lectures‟ or teachers‟ personality toward students‟
speaking English and continue this research.
