Indonesian Junior High School Students’ Reaction to Using Smartphone and Social Media for English Vocabulary Knowledge Feedbac

The purpose of this research is to determine the use of smartphone and social media in
students' English vocabulary knowledge. This research use qualitative research with
thematic analysis. In collecting data, this research use two data collection procedures,
namely, observation and interviews. Then the results of the data were analyzed by using
thematic analysis. Based on the results of observations and interviews regarding the
use of smartphone and social media in students' English vocabulary knowledge, it can
be argu that the use of smartphone and social media makes it easier for students to find
English vocabulary because smartphone and social media have a wider scope and also
have features for people who use English a lot; one of the features that students often
use is the WhatsApp application. The WhatsApp application is an application that can
receive and send messages quickly, so it can be used as a medium for providing
feedback between teachers and students. As for student reactions to the use of
smartphone and social media in students' English vocabulary knowledge, namely
unstable networking, English structures that are difficult to understand, and students
having difficulty pronouncing English vocabular
A. Conclusion
Based on the findings from observations and interviews, as well as the
discussion in the previous chapter, the researcher can conclude the use of
smartphone and social media is increasing students' English vocabulary knowledge:
1) The use of smartphone and social media is good enough to apply to students'
increasing knowledge of English vocabulary because smartphone and social media
have a wider scope than books and dictionaries. Smartphone and social media also
have features in the use of English; one of the features students often use is the
application WhatsApp. The WhatsApp application is an application that uses
English and can be used to receive and send messages quickly, so that it can be used
as a medium for providing feedback between students and teachers. It shows that
the use of smartphone and social media can improve students' English vocabulary
knowledge. 2) As for students' reactions to the use of smartphone and social media
in increasing students’ English vocabulary knowledge, namely unstable networks,
difficult to understand English structures, and difficulty for students to understand
and pronounce English vocabulary.
B. Suggestion
To improve teaching and learning activities, in the end the researcher would
like to give some suggestions to the parties involved in English language education
as follows:
1. For Teacher
Teachers must be smart in dealing with students and also be more
creative in using existing media such as the use of smartphone and social
media in increasing students' English vocabulary. Teachers must have
various ideas so that students can understand and improve English
vocabulary well.
2. For Students
While using smartphone and social media students must be aware of
their own duties as students. Therefore, although students are allowed to use
smartphone and social media, students must use them well in a more positive
direction. students can find English vocabulary that is not limited to their
smartphone and social media.
3. For Further Researchers
For other researchers, this research can be a kind of reference and an
interesting way to improve students' vocabulary skills
