The Representation Of Politeness Values In Indonesian Junior High School Students' English Textbook: A Critical Discourse Analysis

This research was conducted to find out types of politeness values focused
on positive and negative politeness in Indonesian junior high school students‟
English textbook. The title of the textbook “When English Rings a Bell” for
Grade VIII junior high school. The approach of this research uses qualitative
research. The data collection method is observation non-participant. Then, the
data analysis uses critical discourse analysis to finish the research questions.
Based on observation, the result of the research shows there are two types of
politeness values of Brown and Levinson in the dialogues in Indonesian junior
high school students‟ English textbook. They are positive politeness and negative
politeness. The percentages of each politeness are also identical. Positive
politeness is realized 60% and negative politeness 40%. The analysis showed that
the frequency of positive politeness is more than negative politeness. Many
conversations and functional texts, especially words in English textbooks for
Indonesian junior high school students, involve participants who maintain close
relationships, such as between friends, and teachers and students.
A. Conclusion
Based on the discussion of findings, some conclusions of this study can be
drawn. First, regarding the first research question, there are two types of
politeness values of Brown and Levinson in the dialogues in Indonesian junior
high school students’ English textbook. They are positive politeness and negative
politeness. The positive politeness is most commonly used in groups of friends or
in situations when the persons in the social scenario know one other pretty well.
The negative politeness is the desire to remain autonomous so the speaker is more
apt to include an out for the hearer. Thought distancing styles like apologies.
The frequency politeness values found was 72 consisting 43 positive
politeness and 29 negative politeness, and the most politeness value frequently
found is positive politeness. So that, Positive politeness is realized 60% and
negative politeness 40%. The analysis showed that the frequency of positive
politeness is more than negative politeness. Many conversations and functional
texts, especially words in English textbooks for Indonesian junior high school
students, involve participants who maintain close relationships, such as between
friends, and teachers and students.
B. Suggestion
Since this study only focuses on the types of politeness found in junior
high school students' English textbooks, some aspects can be investigated further
in future studies. First, it can add information to teachers and students about
politeness values in English textbooks. Second, apart from providing information,
it can also provide examples to students on how to use politeness both inside and
outside the classroom.
