Students’ Perception Of Using Digital Literacy On Youtube And Whatsapp As Learning Media In Teaching Speaking

This thesis aims to discuss students' perceptions of the use of Digital Literacy on
YouTube and WhatsApp as learning media in teaching speaking. This research is
a qualitative research with qualitative descriptive type. In taking the sample in
this research using purposive sampling technique, where the sample was selected
by taking ten students. In collecting research data, the researcher used interview
as an instrument. Then the results of the data are analyzed using reduction,
display, and drawing conclusions or verification. Based on the results of the
research, it was stated that the students had positive and negative perceptions of
the use of digital literacy media on YouTube and WhatsApp as learning media in
teaching speaking. The positive perceptions of the students indicate that the use of
digital media literacy YouTube and WhatsApp as effective learning media to be
applied in teaching English, especially in teaching students to speak in public,
students do not get bored when learning to speak, and interactions in the learning
process between students and students and teacher are good. And for the students'
negative perceptions, there are still students who feel that the use of YouTube and
WhatsApp as learning media in learning to speak is still less effective. Therefore,
it is highly recommended for teachers to be able to maximize the use of learning
media such as YouTube and WhatsApp in teaching speaking to teach as
interesting and creative as possible so that students are more interested in learning
to speak.
A. CONCLUSION
Based on the findings and discussion in the previous chapter, the
researcher can conclude that there are positive and negative perceptions of the
students about the use of digital literacy on YouTube and WhatsApp as learning
media in teaching speaking.
1. The positive perceptions of the students are that YouTube and
WhatsApp are digital literacy media that are widely used by teachers as
learning media. Relate about the other perceptions of the use of learning
media, both YouTube and WhatsApp as learning media to speak are
considered capable of motivating students, effective, and can attract
students' attention to be used in learning to speak because many videos
relate of speaking can be watched on YouTube as well as WhatsApp,
some features can be used to do this speaking practice like voice notes,
besides that, they can play speaking learning videos over and over again
until they understand . The using of YouTube and WhatsApp as
learning media also can more confident in speaking English in public.
So that many students like to use the learning media. In addition,
YouTube and WhatsApp have advantages as learning media to speak,
which are more effective and efficient in their use and students can
learn to speak through many videos watched on youtube and can learn
anywhere and anytime as long as the internet connection is good, and
about the interaction between the students and the teacher in learning
process also can be said is good.
2. The Negative perceptions of the students of the two learning media, it
can be seen that there are still students who sometimes feel that
YouTube and WhatsApp are not optimal or still less effective because
of the lack of applications for friends or teachers. Then YouTube and
WhatsApp also have disadventeges and the oconstraint namely,
sometimes there are talking videos that are not understood because
sometimes there is no translation and the sounds is not clear,ads often
appear and requires more quota or data to use the application. In
addition, sometimes the network or connection is bad when you have a
good network to play videos on YouTube or to send or receive
messages on WhatsApp in the form of chat or voice notes, and others.
Therefore, to attract students' attention in learning to speak, teachers
need to maximize and develop the use of digital literacy media such as
YouTube and WhatsApp in the speaking learning process.
B. SUGGESTION
After closing the conclusions and conducting the research, the
researcher has several suggestions for English teachers, students, and the
next researchers.
1. For English teachers
Suggestions for teachers, hopefully in future teachers can apply
them well in the future by using digital literacy media on YouTube and
WhatsApp as learning media in teaching speaking. And hopefully in
the future teachers can be more creative in choosing and using learning
media such as digital literacy media such as YouTube and WhatsApp
specifically speaking so that students can be more motivated to learn
speaking.
2. For students
Suggestions for students, in learnimg English especially in
speaking that students can be more enthusiastic and more motivated to
learn speaking using digital literacy learning media YouTube and
WhatsApp in learning speaking.
3. For the next researchers
Suggestions for further researchers, hopefully this research can be
useful as a reference for further researchers and can develop further
research that wants to conduct further research on student perception
of using digital literacy on YouTube and WhatsApp as learning media
in teaching speaking.
