The Correlation Between Students Motivation In Learning English And Vocabulary Mastery At Mts 1 Kajuara

This research aims to determine whether there is a correlation between
students’ motivation in learning English and vocabulary mastery. The sample used in
this research amount 27 respondents taken from 2 nd grade students of MTs 1
Kajuara. The method used in this research is quantitative method through correlation
technique design. The instrument used are a questionnaire and vocabulary tests. The
questionnaire adopted from the Attitude/Motivation Test Battery (AMTB) by
Gardner. The measure students’’ vocabulary skills, this research used multiple choice
tests to students. The collected data is then analyzed using the Pearson product
correlation in SPSS 25. The result showes that the value of Motivation in learning
English and Vocabulary Mastery was r xy (0.577), which included a medium
correlation. At sign 0,002 because it is significantly smaller than 0,05, it indicates
that there is a significant correlation between students motivation in learning
English and vocabulary mastery. It means that the alternative hypothesis (Ha) is
accepted and null hypothesis (Ho) is rejected.
A. Conclusions
Based on the description of the data which described in the previous chapter,
it can be conclude that there is a significant correlation between students motivation
in learning English ( X variable) and vocabulary mastery (Y variable). After
measuring the correlation between students’ motivation in learing English and
vocabulary mastery, the researcher found that r = 0,002< 0,05, it means that the
alternative hypothesis (Ha) is accepted and null hypothesis (Ho) is rejected. It is
considered that there is medium correlation between students’ motivation in learning
English and vocabulary mastery .Besides, by looking at calculation above, there is
positive correlation between X variable and Y variable. It meand students with
higher motivation will get a good vocabulary. It can be concluded that students
motivation affects their vocabulary.
B. Suggestions
Motivation can make teaching and learning easier and more interesting. It
would be nice for teachers and students to motivate each other in the teaching and
learning process. English teachers have an important role to support their students
in learning English to improve their vocabulary. The teacher must create and
interesting situation so that students are comfortable in learning English. In
addition, students must also have motivation in themselves to learn new
vocabulary. Because motivated people often get good result.
The researcher will give some suggestion:
1. For English Teachers
English teacher are expected to increase students’ motivation
in learning English, especially in improving their vocabulary skills. In
addition, English teacher must inform the importance of motivation, to
make learning more effective and enjoyable among students. So, teachers
must have creative ways to make students more interested in learning
English, especially in learning new vocabulary.
2. For students
For srudents it’s expected to increase motivation to learn
English, especially in learning new vocabulary. They must also know
that English is very important in their lives, especially for their future.
3. For futher researchers
Who are interested in conducting similar research. This
research can be use as a reference for them to support their research.
