A Self-Reflection as an Indonesian University Student on Test of English Listening Comprehension

The purpose of this research was to find out how is a self-reflection as an Indonesian
university student on test of English listening comprehension. In this research, the
researcher used qualitative approach. The instrument of this research was used
student‟s reflection journal to collect the data. Then the results of the data were
analyzed using content analysis. The results shows that based on the student‟s
reflection journal that have been conducted, the participant did reflections in different
time frames such as reflection-before-test, reflection-during-test, reflection-after-test
and reflection-beyond-test of English listening comprehension. Through self-
reflection, the student becomes aware of her listening comprehension, find some
ideas on how to increase her performance, and put these ideas into practice.
A. Conclusion
The objective of this research is to find out a self-reflection as an
Indonesian university student on test of English listening comprehension.
Based on the findings and results of research that has been carried out from
student‟s reflection journal, it can be said that before taking english listening
comprehension test, the student‟s listening comprehension was at a low level,
because while in high school the student did not receive sufficient practice in
English listening comprehension. In the college, the student took a listening
test for two semesters in basic listening course and critical listening course.
There are various listening activities carried out by student during the listening
comprehension test. The student learn from these activities new and unfamiliar
words, and as they listen they may pronounce these word. From test of
English listening comprehension the student felt that her English listening
comprehension was improved. The student become aware of how to listen
well and are motivated to continue doing listening practice.
Regarding the listening difficulties and problems experienced by
student on test of English listening comprehension, it can be seen that limited
English vocabulary, speed of speech, accent of native speaker, unclear
pronounciation and pshycal setting are the main factors that make it difficult
for the student to understand the speaker‟s intent. To overcome her problem,
the student do listening practice through the media and recommend the
lecturers to review the audio before it was played in class, and also
recommend to the campus to provide a language laboratory.
B. Suggestion
After covering the conclusions and implication of the research, the
researcher has some suggestions for english listening lecturers, students, and
future researchers.
1. For the English listening lecturers
Suggestions for English listening lecturers, hopefully the research
conducted can provide more motivations so that student performance more
better so that it fulfills the purpose of testing students‟ listening
comprehension.
2. For the student
Suggestion for students, hopefully this research can be useful for
students could be easy to review their experience during learning English
through a reflection journal.
3. For the next researcher
Suggestions for the next researchers, hopefully this research can be
useful for anyone who wants to take a references in increasing researchers‟
knowledge about self-reflection and listening comprehension. The future
research can expand the scope of the participants in order to get a more
varied sample. It will also make the data richer and more complety.
