Enhancing Students’ Speaking Ability Through English Podcast (A Study At The Twelfth Grade Of Sman 7 Bone)

This research presents about learning media in form of English podcast at the
twelfth grade students of SMAN 7 Bone. This research aims to find out the
enhancement of students’ speaking ability through English podcast. There are two
variables in this research. The dependent variable is students’ speaking ability. The
independent variable is English podcast. This research used quantitative method which
used pre-experimental research with one group pre-test and post-test. The researcher
used cluster sampling. The sample consisted of 15 students from the XII MIPA1 of
SMAN 7 Bone. The researcher gave pre-test, treatments, and post-test. The data on the
students’ speaking skill were analyzed by using SPSS 25. The experimental group was
given pre-test, treatment and post-test by using English podcast. The result of this
research showed that after teaching speaking through English podcast, the students
have good skill in speaking. It showed from the mean score of post-test was
significantly higher than pre-test (75.40 > 66.86). It also could be seen from the result
of t-test showed 0,000 which was < significant degree (0,05). It could be defined that
H0 (null hypothesis) is rejected, and automatically H1 (alternative hypothesis) is
accepted. Therefore, it could be stated that using English podcast could enhance
students’ speaking ability.
A. Conclusion
Based on the data analysis and discussion in the previous chapter, the
researcher concluded that using English podcast as a media in teaching speaking
enhanced students’ speaking ability. It can be proved by seeing the mean score
and standard deviation of pre-test and post-test. The mean score of pre-test is
66,86 and standard deviation of pre-test is 8,576. While, the mean score of post-
test is 75,40 and standard deviation of post-test is 8,918. Furthermore, the t-test
result showed 0,000 which is < significance degree (0,05). It indicated that H1
is accepted and H0 is rejected. It means that there is a different significant of the
students’ speaking ability in pre-test and post-test after giving treatment through
English podcast.
In conclusion, the uses of English podcast as media in teaching speaking
can enhance students’ speaking ability at SMAN 7 Bone.
B. Suggestion
Based on the research results and conclusion, the researcher would like
to give suggestions as follows:
1. For the English teacher must be creative in managing material that must be
integrated into the classroom.
2. For the enhancement of teaching English, the researcher suggest to the
English teacher should use English podcast as alternative technique in
teaching speaking that it should be creative to use it in order to make the
students more active and interested in teaching learning process.
3. For the students, they should realize that speaking is not as difficult as they
think. Students should not feel shame in speaking activity. They should not
be afraid of making mistakes. The students also are expected to have more
practice in speaking activity.
4. For the other researcher, it can be suggested may use as an additional
reference for further researches. Moreover, it is expected to conduct further
researches in different areas and topics.
