The Correlation Between Students’ Speaking Interest and Speaking Ability at the Tenth Grade of MTSN 1 Watampone

This research was correlational reserach, which was aimed to find out the corelation
between students’ speaking interest and speaking ability. There were two variable in
this research. They were students speaking interest and students speaking ability. The
sample in this research was students in the ninth grade of MTSN 1 Watampone
consisted of 26 students. The researcher collected data through Questionnaire, to
measure students interest, and speaking test, to measure the students speaking ability.
The result showed that the speaking interest and speaking ability had strong
correlation. It was evidence by the significant test 0.00 and the correlation value was
0.819. The final result showed that there is a positive correlation between stuudents’
speaking interest and speaking ability. Interest gives positive influence in learning
speaking skill. Students who had higher interest in speaking got better score than the
lower one.
A. Conclusion
The analysis of hypothesis testing in this research is students‟ speaking
interest and speaking ability have a positive and significant correlation. Based on
the level of relationship, the correlation value of 0.819 is in the correlation interval
between 0.70 – 0.90 which means the correlation is strong. Moreover, the mean
score of students speaking interest is 77.50 and the mean score of students‟
speaking ability is 72.77. The standard deviation of students speaking interest. The
standard deviation of students speaking interest is 8.927 and students speaking
ability is 14.978. Thus, there is a strong correlation between students speaking
interest and students' speaking ability in the ninth grade of MTS Negeri 1
Watampone.
B. Suggestion
As the final result, since the students speaking interest have a correlation
with speaking ability, the researcher proposed some suggestion as follow:
1. It is suggested for students to increase their speaking interest because it can
affect their speaking ability. If the students have high interest, they can get
a high result as output in speaking ability. Students can improve their
speaking ability by increasing their speaking interest.
2. For the teacher, the researcher recommends concerns on students speaking
ability. It can be done by facilitating the students and giving high
motivation to students to have more interest in learning English especially
speaking.
3. This finding is expected to be a reference for the further researchers that is
concern with speaking interest and speaking ability.
