Increasing the Students’ Understanding on Simple Past Tense by Through Grammar Translation Method at The Eleventh Grade Students of MA Al-Junaidiyah Biru Bone

The aim of this thesis is to find out the students’ problem in understanding
simple past tense through Grammar Translation Method.
This research used quantitative method which through pre-experimental
research with one group pre-test and post-test. The researcher used cluster sampling.
The sample consisted of 23 students from the XI.IPS 1 of MA Al-Junaidiyah Biru
Bone. The researcher gave pre-test, treatments, and post-test. The data on the
students’ writing ability were analyzed by using SPSS 20. The experimental group
was given pre-test, treatment and post-test by using grammar translation method.
The result of this research shows that the students understanding on simple
past tense increase by using grammar translation method. It can be seen from the
comparison data between the mean score of post-test is significantly higher than pre-
test (83.69> 67.39). So, it is stated that the students’ understanding on simple past
tense increase by using grammar translation method.
A. Conclusion
Based on the data analysis and the discussion in the previous chapter, the
researcher concludes that:
The result of this research shows that Grammar Translation Method can
increase the students’ understanding on simple past tense. It can be seen from the
data that collected by the researcher in pre-test and post-test. The students who just
gain the mean score of 67,39 in the pre-test, are able to increase their score up to the
mean score of 83,69 in the post test. It indicates that they are considerable to increase
their understanding on simple past tense after the researcher gave the treatment to the
students through grammar translation method as a teaching method.
B. Suggestion
In view of the fact that the use of grammar translation method has been
proved to be effective in teaching simple past tense, the researcher would like to give
some suggestions as follows:
1. For the English teacher keep creative in managing the material and in
presenting the material.
2. For the improvement of the teaching English, the researcher suggests to the
English teacher to choose the good and the suitable method in teaching
English.
3. For the students, considering this method, the researcher suggests the students
to learn English especially in learning tenses through this method. It is really
suitable for the students to understand easily about tenses.
4. For the other researcher, the researcher suggests that the other researcher may
use the research result as information or a reference to conduct the similar
research about increasing the students’ understanding on simple past tense
through grammar translation method.
