Juhairah Arfah/ 02.17.4080 - Personal Name
This research is conducted to find out Indonesian Senior High School students’
understanding of plagiarism in virtual classroom learning experience context. The
researcher used qualitative research approach in the form of case study design.
Data collection method used was questionnaire and semi structured interview.
Research instruments used in this research were also in the form of questionnaire
and interview and supported by mobile recorder and written notes. Twenty
students from the eleventh grade students of a Senior High School in Palakka
District became participants of this research. The data analysis process in this
research consisted of collecting data, reducing data, displaying data, drawing
conclusion and verification. The findings of questionnaires and interview showed
that students have a perception that the implementation of online learning during
pandemic has advantages and disadvantages. In addition, in online learning
process so far students have no understanding of plagiarism in doing their
assignments. This is caused by personal factor and their environment, especially
the school environment. Personal factor such as the lack of curiosity of students to
find out more about plagiarism are also influenced by environment factors such as
the absence of rules regarding plagiarism at school, plagiarism has never been
taught before, and the implementation of the wrong reference citing method
among students.
A. Conclusion
Based on the results of the analysis and discussion in the previous chapter,
the researcher finally concluded about students' understanding of plagiarism in the
context of online learning experiences. The researcher concluded that during the
pandemic the learning process implemented in schools in the form of online
learning had advantages and disadvantages in its application. Online learning
provides easy access for students, space and time flexibility, various sources of
information that can be accessed 24 hours a day. Online learning also provides a
sense of relaxation for students during the learning process. However , in the
application of online learning there are still some obstacles and deficiencies such
as network constraints and learning materials that are poorly understood by
students.
Furthermore, in carrying out assignments during online learning, students
were not based on an understanding of plagiarism. Even though they already have
an understanding of the importance of citing references, in practice they have
unknowingly committed plagiarism. This is caused by personal factors and their
environment. The personal factor here means that some students have previously
heard or encountered the term plagiarism and already know the basic definition of
plagiarism, but they have no desire to find out more about plagiarism itself. There
are no rules regarding plagiarism that are applied in schools, so it is not surprising
that students are completely unaware of plagiarism. What's worse, with the
understanding and use of the wrong citation method, students think that they have
cited references according to the procedure, but in fact, they actually commit
plagiarism without realizing it.
B. Suggestion
Considering that the Indonesian senior high school students‟ understanding
of plagiarism in virtual classroom learning experience context shows results like
on conclusion section above, so the researcher would give some suggestion as
follows:
1. For the school
Researcher hopes that this research can be input and material for
introspection for schools so that in the future they will pay more attention
to plagiarism in schools, especially related to students' understanding of
plagiarism. One of the things that can be done is to start forming rules
regarding proper and procedural citations.
2. For teachers
Teachers should unite perceptions regarding appropriate citations in order
to avoid confusion about the citation method that will be applied to all
students in learning. Clear boundaries are also good for students regarding
the reference sources they use in doing assignments and how they cite
existing references.
3. For students
The researcher hopes that with this research students will begin to pay
more attention to plagiarism. Students are expected to be more willing to
learn more about plagiarism, and try to avoid it in the process of doing
their assignments.
4. For other researchers
For other researchers, it is hoped that this research can become
information or reference in carrying out research related to students'
understanding of plagiarism. However, this research still has deficiencies
such as the absence of supporting data in the form of interviews with
teachers and the school. It is hoped that the other researchers can pay
more attention to teacher and school participation in students‟
understanding of plagiarism.
