A Comparative Study Of Students Vocabulary Achievement Using Silent Way And Direct Method At The Seventh Grade SMPN 1 Sibulue

The objective of this research was to know the significant difference between
the students taught through silent way and the students taught through direct method.
This research employed quasi-experimental design. This type of research involves
two classes with Experimental class and Control class. The population of this
research was the first grade of SMPN 1 Sibulue in academic year 2021/2022. The
sample of this research were VII.A that consist of 16 students as experimental group
and VII.B that consist of 17 students as control group. The instrument of this
research was multiple choice and find the meaning. The findings of the research
showed the students’ achievement obtained from the test. The research found that the
result of the students’ mean score of post-test (86.63) in experimental group was
greater than the mean score of post test (78.71) in control group. The standard
deviation of post-test in experimental group was 8.437 and the standard deviation of
post-test in control group was 10.325. Sig.(2-tailed) in equal variances assumed post-
test is 0.022 and in equal variances not assumed post-test is 0.022. Both of them were
< 0.05. It indicated that H 1 was accepted and Ho was rejected. The researcher
concluded that there was a significant difference between silent way method and
direct method of the student at class VII.A and VII.B of SMPN 1 Sibulue.
A. Conclusion
Using silent way method is better than using direct method. It is proved
by the mean score based on pre-test and post-test in experimental class and
control class. The mean score in experimental group before and after treatment
(64.94 becomes 86.63) and in control group before and after treatment (60.47
becomes 78.71) with the t-test pre-test in equal variances assumed is 0.379 and in
equal variances not assumed is 0.377. Both of them were > 0.05. It means that
there was no significant difference between experimental and control group in
pre-test (before giving the treatment). While the t-test post-test in equal variances
assumed is 0.022 and in equal variances not assumed is 0.022. Both of them were
< 0.05. It means that there was significant difference between experimental and
control group in post-test (after giving the treatment).
B. Suggestion
Based on the research results and conclusion, the researcher would like to
give suggestions as follows:
1. For the English teacher, in order to succeed in teaching English, the silent
way method should be used for teaching learning English especially
vocabulary as the English component. The teacher can be more creative in
applying that method to the students and use it in teaching vocabulary so that
the students are motivated, interested, and not bored in learning English.
2. For the improvement of teaching English, the researcher suggest to the
English teacher should use silent way method in teaching vocabulary that it
should be creative to use it in order to make the students more active in
teaching learning process.
3. For the students, after getting materials with the silent way method, the
students improve their vocabulary achievement. The students are suggested
to follow up the vocabulary by using it in their study. As the principle of
silent way method, the students become independent, autonomous, and
responsible in language. The students should not only know the definition of
words, but also learned about how to make a sentence using those words.
4. For the other researcher. It can suggested may use as an additional reference
for further researches. Moreover, it is expected to conduct further researches
in different areas and topics.
