Teaching Reading Comprehension in Narrative Text through Theves Strategy at Eleventh Grade of SMAN 4 Bone

No image available for this title
The objective of this research is to find out the effectiveness of Thieves
Strategy in Teaching Reading Comprehension in Narrative Text of SMAN 4 Bone
academic year 2020/2021. The subjects of the research are 46 students of grade XI
that chosen through cluster random sampling, which classified into two classes,
experimental and control classes. The method used in this research was quantitative
research. The design was quasi-experimental study and the primary instrument of
this research were pre-test and post-test. The data of the tests were calculated by
using t-test in SPSS 21 with significance value (a) of this test is 5% or 0.05. In the
pre-test of control class, mean score is 50.22 and mean score of post-test is 61.52.
While the pre-test of experimental class is 48.30 and the mean score of post-test is
74.74. The result of significance test (t-test) post-test control and experimental classes
is 0.001< 0.05. It can be stated that the Ho (Null Hypothesis) is rejected and Ha
(Alternative Hypothesis) is accepted. It means that there is a significant difference
between the students’ achievement in experimental class and control class. Then, the
calculation of Cohen‟s Effect Size shows 1.01 which means that THIEVES strategy
has a strong effect on the students’ reading comprehension in narrative text. Based on
the result reading test and all of the actions that are implemented during the research
is success. So, it can be said that the use of THIEVES Strategy is effective in
teaching reading comprehension in narrative text at eleventh grade of SMAN 4 Bone
academic year 2020/2021
A. Conclusion
This subtitle presents to answer of the questions which have written at the
research question in the previous chapther. After conducting the research and doing
data analysis, the researcher derived conclution as follows:
1. The result of this research showes that the use of THIEVES strategy is
effective for students’ reading comprehension of narrative text. It could be
seen from the statistical calculation, Sig. (2-tailed) of finding and discussion
in the chapter three. Where, the t-test result showed 0.001which is < 0.05. It
indicates that H1 is accepted and Ho is rejected. It means that THIEVES
strategy is effective in students’ reading comprehension. Then, the calculation
of Cohen‟s Effect Size showed 1.01 which means that THIEVES strategy has
a strong effect on the students’ reading comprehension in narrative text.
2. Based on the students’ achievement, it is found that there is significant
difference between the students’ reading ahievement in Experimental class
after giving the treatment by using THIEVES strategy than students’
achievement in control class who taught using Conventional strategy. It could
be seen from the students’ post-test score in both classes. In the post-test of
control class, the mean score is 48.30 while mean score in experimental was
74.74. It indicated that the students’ score of experimental class higher than
the students’ score of control after getting the treatment. Then, from the post-
test score of both classes, the t-test result shows 0.001which is < significance
value (α) 0.05. It indicates that H1 is accepted and H0 is rejected. It means that
there is a significant difference between the students’ achievement in
Experimental class after giving the treatment by using THIEVES strategy than
students’ achievement in control class after giving the treatment by using
Conventional strategy.
B. Suggestion
After covering up the conclusions and the implementation of the research, the
researcher has some suggestions for the English teacher, students and the next
researcher.
1. For The English Teacher
In the process of teaching and learning process, especially in reading
comprehension, choosing an effective strategy that is appropriate to the students’
abilities and learning objectives is important for the teacher. The researcher
suggests using the THIEVES (Title, Heading, Introduction, Every first sentence,
Visual/Vocabulary, End of the text, and Summary) strategy to teach reading
comprehension in narrative text as it has been proven to be successful in the class.
By using this strategy, the students will easier to comprehend the text. Therefore,
THIEVES strategy can be used to improve students’ reading comprehension in
narrative text especially to find out, main idea, vocabulary, specific information,
general information and moral value.
2. For The Students
The researcher suggests the students when they studied English subject
especially in reading comprehension either at school or at home can apply
THIEVES (Title, Heading, Introduction, Every first sentence, Visual/Vocabulary,
End of the text, and Summary) strategy because with this strategy students should
not read all of the text, the students only read some point to steal information
about the text and it can make students more easy to comprehend the text.
3. For the next researcher
The researcher hopes other researchers can use this research as a reference
to conduct their research on the same field. It is really possible that there is
another more effective way to teach reading comprehension.
