This research aimed to analyse the students’ grammatical errors by using
passive voice in making cause effect text. The focus of this research was analysis the
students’ grammatical errors or what mistakes the student did in making cause effect
text by using passive voice.
This research employed a descriptive qualitative research method. The data
was collected through observation, test and interview. The subject of this research
was the students at the second grade of SMAN 24 BONE. The data analysis was
employed based on procedure of data analysis suggested by Miles and Huberman that
consisted of step data reduction, display and verification.
The result of this research showed that passive voice was one of the English
material which quite difficult to be mastered by the students. Ten of students made
errors. Common errors were made by the students are the students did not use or put
the verb “to be (am, is, are, was, were) before verb past participle and did not use the
verb “be” before modal. They just directly wrote verb past participle after the subject
of the sentences they made. The student said that they did not really understand about
the forms of passive sentence, the changes of the verb like from V1 into V3 or past
parciple, vocabulary and it is quite difficult to arrange the sentece based on the form
of passive sentence.
A. Conclusion
Among three types of errors most errors are done on the third type of
agreement of subject and verb. Especially on verb tense and form errors in making
cause effect text by using passive voice. The researcher concludes that common
grammatical errors appear in agreement of subject and verb especially in verb
tense and form. If viewed as a whole, the most error made in verb tense and form.
The students’ make passive sentences in cause effect text but they did not use to
be (am, is, are, was, were, be) before verb participle. This is actually one of the
important parts in making passive sentence.
The causes of errors, first is there are five students made error that is
caused of inter lingual error because the usage of the mother tongue by the
students who has not known the rules of target language will use the same rules as
he obtained in his native language. The second is there are five students made
error that is caused of intra lingual error because the students still have limited
knowledge about the pattern and arranging the sentence.
B. Suggestion
Based on the existing facts of this research, the students have made errors
in making cause effect text by using passive voice and it is one thing should be
taken notice of the English teacher especially in teaching passive voice. From
those errors, the researcher would like to give suggestions as follows:
1. After all, it has been proven that students have made errors in making
cause effect text by using passive voice. The teacher could use or look for
a way or a method in teaching grammar especially passive voice. A
method is needed to motivate and make the student easy to figure out the
material. These errors mean that the teacher has responsibily a improve
and expand the students’ capabilty in learning English grammar.
2. The students of the second grade at SMAN 24 BONE semester must have
the diversity of learning media to support their success in teaching
grammar.
3. For the other researcher, It is suggested that other researcher may use the
research results as information or a reference to conduct the research with
the similar topic in the same design to analyse the students’ grammatical
errors by using passive voice in making cause effect text.
