The Representation Of Politeness Values In An Indonesian Senior High School-Elt Textbook: An Attitudinal Analysis

The research examined the politeness values represented in an Indonesian senior high school
ELT textbook using an attitudinal analysis. It studies two main things with ELT textbook,
those are how the ELT textbook provides Indonesian learners with opportunities to enhance
learners’ knowledge and awareness of the politeness value and what the type of politeness
values is presented in the ELT textbook. The researcher conducts an attitudinal analysis, a
part of the appraisal system, mixed with politeness theory. The instruments in collecting data
are a document analysis and interview. The primary data is collected from the ELT textbook
for the eleventh grade of Senior High School, specifically chapter I, II, and chapter III while
secondary data is gathered from the result of an interview with the teacher.
The research revealed that the chapter I, II and III of ELT textbook represent politeness value
within a conversation in numbers with the lens of attitudinal analysis. With the numbers of
politeness values found, it opens wide opportunities for the learners to know the politeness
value in some kinds. Besides, it also builds an awareness of politeness value for the students.
the researcher found some types of politeness values represented in the textbook, they are
positive politeness, negative politeness, bald on record, and off record. Each form of
politeness has some expression, except the type of record politeness.
A. Conclusion
Based on the data analysis and discussion in the previous chapter, the
ELT textbook represents politeness value within the conversation in numbers
with the lens of attitudinal analysis. From the theory of attitudinal analysis, the
dimension of affect, judgment, and appreciation is provided in the conversations
in Chapters I, II, and III plus information from the teacher where it opens wide
opportunities for the learners to know politeness value in some kinds. In addition,
it also builds an awareness of politeness value for the students because of high
representation.
The representation of politeness values in the ELT Textbook can be
identified through the 4 politeness strategies offered in the politeness theory of
Brown and Levinson. The four politeness strategies are contained in the
conversations in the textbooks in Chapters I, II, and III, except that the off-record
strategy is not found. the rest, for positive politeness strategy, negative politeness
strategy, and bald on Record strategy are represented in this eleventh grade ELT
book.
B. Suggestions
Considering the conclusion above some suggestions are presented in this part. In
this study, it is hoped that the politeness values presented in the ELT Textbook
can be realized to students. So that teachers not only provide an understanding of
the material to students but also explain Politeness values to students, to increase
students' awareness of politeness values.
