Students’ Perception Toward Reading Difficulties in Learning English as a Foreign Language at the Eleventh Grade of SMAN 16 Bone

This thesis present research about Students’ Perception toward Reading
Difficulties in Learning English as a Foreign Language at the Eleventh Grade of
SMAN 16 Bone. As we know that it is not easy for the students in high school to read
in English language. The objective of this research is to find out students’ perception
toward reading difficulties in learning Englisha as a foreign language. This research
uses qualitative descriptive approach, employs a true research through observation,
questionnnaire and interview. The researcher choose one class as a sample. The class
is XI IPS 3 which consists of 20 active students. The procedure of collecting data are
performed through observation, questionnaire and interview. The researcher comes to
the school and observe the students’ attitude or behaviour during learning English.
Then, the second treatment is questionnare. The students have to answer a
questionnaire which consists of 10 questions. Interview technique as necessary in
order to facilitate the researcher to find out the information who suppose to provide
concrete data relating to the discussion using direct conversation with the students.
The results of this research are most of the students have reading difficulties
in learning English as a foreign language. They have various kind of problems in
reading such as; most of them don’t know how to pronounce the words, have lack of
vocabulary, lack of confident to read in front of their friends, difficult to understand
the structure of the text, difficulty regarding comprehension and the others. The
existence of gadget is one of the reason why students decrease their quality time to
study and of course have negative impact on their learning outcomes.
A. Conclusion
Based on the result of data analysis and discussion in the previous chapter,
the researcher concluded that students at the Eleventh grade of SMAN 16 Bone
exactly class XI IPS 3 have a lot of Reading difficulties in learning Engliah as a
foreign language. For example; most of them don’t know how to pronounce the
words, they have lack of vocabulary and often forget what they have learnt, they also
have lack of confident to read in the class, difficulty in understanding the structure of
the text, difficulty regarding comprehension and many others.
B. Sugestion
Based on the conlusion above the researcher put some sugestion as follows:
1. The teacher shall try to create new method of teaching English in order to
increase students’ motivation and interest in learning Reading.
2. Student can change their habits while learning English and realize that Reading is
an important skill that must be owned.
