Analyzing the Students’ English Speaking Skill By Using Gender Besed Small Group Discussion At the Eleventh Grade of SMAN 13 Bone

This research aims to analyze the students’ English speaking skill by using
gender based small group discussion at the eleventh grade of SMA 13 Bone. The
subject of this research were the male and female of students in SMA 13 Bone at the
eleventh grade at exact program. That included of 10 male students and 25 female
students in a class. In this research, the researcher used descriptive qualitative
method. After analyzing the students’ English speaking skill by using gender based
small group discussion, the researcher found that there were five female students of
25 students reach a good level in speaking skill and also there were five male students
of 10 students reach a good enough in speaking skill. The result of this research was
the male students were not better than the female students in English speaking skill.
They were only slightly different in the speaking, in which the female students got
middle level in speaking than the male students got low level in speaking. There were
four factors made male and female different, the first is fluency. Speaking in which
fluency was measured by considering the total number of seconds of silence and time
spent saying and by subjects as they complete a task. The second is pronunciation,
pronunciation became important because it gave meaning to what was being said.
Wrong pronunciation maight cause misunderstanding or people involved in a
conversation were offended. The third is grammar, grammar was the system of rules
governing the conventional arrangement and relationship of words in a sentence. And
the last is vocabulary. Vocabulary was the fondation of the English component, it was
the most improtant component of English because how could they pronounce the
words correctly, how could the speak English grammatically and fluently if they have
not vocabulary in their mind.
A. Conclusion
Based on the result of data analysis and discussion in the previous chapter,
the researcher concluded actually, the male students are not better than the female
students in English speaking skill. They are only slightly different in the speaking,
in which the female students get middle level in speaking than the male students
get low level in speaking. However, when the researcher do the observation to
both male and female students. The researcher finds almost all of the female
students are more confident, active, and enthusiastic compared to the female
students in describing pictures given though they have some problems with
vocabulary, grammar, and fluency. But, the male students slightly excel in
comprehension, vocabulary and pronunciation. In the pronunciation aspect,
female students get a good value than male students. In small group discussion,
female students give more roles in the group.
B. Suggestion
After finishing the study about the students’ English speaking skill by
using gender based small group discussion at the eleventh grade of SMA 13 Bone,
the researcher, tries to give essential suggestion for the future researcher
1. For the English Teacher
Based on the recent findings showes that male students in English
speaking skill is still low and the female students reach middle level in English
speaking skill based small group discussion. The lack of vocabulary is the one
of many problems that caused students became confuse in speaking discussion,
so they still not good enough. The teacher should be able to increase and
improve their student’s knowledge and their knowledge about speaking
especially vocabulary for the students to make them easy to speak. The teacher
also gives motivation for the students to practice their ability in various aspects
of English skill.
2. For the Next Researcher
Here, the researcher suggests to the next researcher can analyze the
improving students skill by using gender based small group discussion. The
other researcher can analyze by using the different manner. And also the next
researchers are expected to extend this research. So, the reader will have better
and deeper understanding related to the study.
