The Implementation of Storytelling in Teaching Listening: a Case Study at SMAN 16 Bone

Storytelling has become a popular issue in listening research and attracts
many researcher to discuss about storytelling included in this study. The focus of this
research is to find out if the implementation of storytelling develops students'
listening skills and knows how the students and the teacher respond to the
implementation of storytelling in SMAN 16 Bone. In this study, the researcher used
qualitative approaches and conducted virtual class research. There are three methods
of data collection, observation, interview and documentation.
Based on the analysis data, it shows that students' listening skills have been
enriched from storytelling implementation. The main factor was storytelling provided
the vocabulary of the story and the participants got new English words from the
storytelling. In obtaining vocabulary, researcher looked at the teacher's activities in
implementing storytelling in the form of text narrative that successfully expanded
students' vocabulary knowledge. Meanwhile, the response of students in receiving
storytelling implementation is very good and the teachers easily teach students in
listening activities.
A. Conclusion
Based on the results of the research can be concluded as follows:
1. The implementation of storytelling in teaching listening based on the results
of interviews students receive learning with fun and easy to understand the
learning provided through videos in the YouTube application, but students
have difficulty in the word students hear the same but have different
meanings. Based on the results of the research table implementation of
storytelling in teaching listening students easily understand the meaning
contained in storytelling through video. But students are not motivated and
the response of students is very little when studying online. But from the
results of the study can be said that the implementation of storytelling in
teaching listening has been running well proven students receive online
learning well.
2. Students' responses are based on the results of interviews students love to
learn with videos in the given YouTube app. Students not only listen but
students can view videos with interesting stories. Although the response of
students is very lacking in learning through online. It can be concluded that
students are happy during the study but because of online learning students
do not respond it is evident that the students listen to the video given.
3. Based on the results of interviews with teachers that students are enthusiastic
about the learning provided through videos in the YouTube app so that
students listen to the materials provided. Although it is difficult to teach
students through online because students are not all active at the same time.
But from the results of the study can be concluded that the implementation
of storytelling in teaching listening is very useful and students interested in
learning through storytelling proved enthusiastic students during the
learning.
B. Suggestion
The implementation of storytelling is highly recommended to be applied
especially to listening activities to trigger student activity. In addition,
storytelling materials provided in the form of videos will be useful to attract
students to understand the content of the story. Teaching listening through
storytelling must be developed continuously to develop students' ability to listen.
Storytelling materials should be careful with adjusting students' interests and the
material is not too difficult and not too easy so that students do not get bored.
The use of gestures, gestures and facial expressions is necessary for
students to better understand the meaning. For teachers who are interested in
using storytelling as a technique in teaching at the high school level, they are
advised to consider the type of story to be presented, facilitating students with
various activities and listening tasks related to listening activities. And the
implementation of storytelling in teaching listening through online is not
recommended because students are less responding.
