A Critical Analysis of Indonesian university Students’ Perceptions of E-Learning in EFL Virtual Classroom Context

E-learning has become increasingly popular during the crisis pandemic.
From the shifting learning methods face-to-face to virtual classrooms, it is
important to examine students' positive perceptions of e-learning in EFL virtual
classroom. For this research, the qualitative approach has been adopted with five
students last semester in one of Institutions in Indonesian. Data collection method
was questionnaire and interview which was analyzed in critical discourse analysis
from four themes of research, namely perceived usefulness, perceived self-
efficacy, perceived ease, and behavioral intention of using e-learning. The result
showed that students' acceptance of e-learning as a new learning method has many
positive effects to the students, such as could be done anywhere and anytime,
added skills in mastering future-oriented technology equipment, made students
feel comfortable, accessible, and available for the applications; and provided
availability of electronic books on various official websites. Although students
gained confidence, benefits, and many conveniences, the findings showed a lack
of e-learning in behavioral intention theme namely deficiency of interaction and
feedback between students and teachers and too much material presentation. In
addition, it offers benefits for policy-makers, designers, and developers to know
more about the key aspects of the successful use of e-learning in the future.
A. Conclusion
Based on the results of the analysis and discussion in the previous
chapter, the researcher concluded that student acceptance of e-learning as a
learning method in the English Foreign Language classroom in Indonesian
University. From several positive perceptions of students including students
who are greatly helped by e-learning; can be done anywhere and anytime; can
add skills in mastering future-oriented technology equipment; using various
platforms in the world of education; highly motivated by varied and reliable
sources; makes students feel comfortable because it is easy to access and
most of the available applications are free; can choose the desired learning
atmosphere both indoors and outdoors; Providing availability of electronic
books on various official websites. The findings are based on the four themes
studied, namely perceived usefulness of e-learning, perceived self-efficacy of
using e-learning, perceived ease of use of e-learning, and behavioral intention
of using e-learning.
B. Suggestion
Since this research only focuses on exploring the positive perceptions
of university-level students towards the use of e-learning in the EFL virtual
classroom context, several aspects can be investigated further in future
studies. First, it is possible to add the perception of the lecturers in the
application of e-learning. Second, in addition to assessing positive
perceptions, it can also examine what are the advantages and disadvantages of
e-learning in the view of students. In addition, further researchers can analyze
students' perceptions by using the theory of technology acceptance model
(TAM).
