Analyzing The Factors of Students’ Speaking Anxiety at The Eleventh Grade Students of SMAN 9 Bone

This research is aim to analyze what factors that cause students‟ speaking
anxiety in English at the eleventh grade students of SMAN 9 Bone. This research
uses a qualitative research approach. This research takes 10 students from class XI
IPA 1 as research subjects. The research is conducted at SMAN 9 Bone, researcher
conduct face-to-face or offline research even though this research is conducted at the
time of COVID-19 and researcher still pay attention to health protocols.
Observation and interview are used by researchers as instruments of the
research. Based on the results of data analysis from the observation and interview
process, the results show that students feel anxious when speaking in English. When
they feel anxious, they would do habits such as lowering their heads, unfocused eyes,
body shaking, cold sweats, and so on. This is caused by four factors, namely: lack of
vocabulary mastery, difficult pronunciation, fear of making mistake, and sham

Based on the results of the data presentation and discussion in the previous
chapter, the researcher concludes that there are four factors that effect of students‟
speaking anxiety at the eleventh grade student of SMAN Bone.
The four factors of students‟ speaking anxiety:
1. Lack of vocabulary mastery
2. Difficult pronunciation
3. Fear of making mistake
4. Shame
The four factors above made students felt less confident to speak in English so
that when students spoke in English they would feel anxious. The lack of mastered
vocabulary and the difficulty of pronouncing the vocabulary itself made them afraid
and embarrassed if they made mistakes.
When they felt anxious about using English, they would show some behaviors
that showed their anxiety, such as: Instantly forgot how to pronounce the words, mis
pronunciation, difficult to speak, not confident, choking while speaking, looking
down at the floor, make a mistake, nervous, etc.
B. Suggestion
Considering the conclusion above some suggestions are presented in this
part. This research focused on analyzing the factors that cause students' anxiety to
speak English. Based on the results obtained, the researchers hope this research will
hopefully contribute both practical and theoretical values.
In this part the researcher would like to give some suggestions to the teacher,
the students and the other researcher.
1. Teachers should pay more attention to students' anxiety when learning
English, especially in learning speaking. Researchers hope that teachers
can play an active role in reducing the anxiety experienced by students
when speaking in English.
2. For students of class XI IPA 1 at SMAN Bone, keep the spirit of learning
and try to fight the anxiety that you are experiencing.
3. For the next researcher in order to be able to research more thoroughly, so
the research with similar purpose can be more perfected and maximized
in general.
