Improving Students’ Speaking Skill through Flash Card in Descriptive Text at The Tenth Grade Students of SMAN 12 Bone

This script presents research about Teaching Speaking through Flash Card in
Descriptive Text at the tenth grade students of SMAN 12 Bone. This research aims to
find out the improvement of students’ speaking skill through flash card in descriptive
text. There are two variables in this research. The dependent variable is improving
students’ speaking skill in descriptive text. The independent variable is flash card.
This research used quantitative method which used pre-experimental research with
one group pre-test and post-test. The researcher used cluster sampling. The sample
consists of 15 students from the X.MIPA 1 of SMAN 12 Bone. The researcher gave
pre-test, treatments, and post-test. The data on the students’ speaking skill were
analyzed by using SPSS 21. The experimental group was given pre-test, treatment
and post-test by using flash card. The result of this research shows that after teaching
speaking through flash card in descriptive text, the students have good skill in
speaking. It can be seen from the result of t-test showed 0,000 which was <
significant degree (0,05). It can be defined that H 0 (null hypothesis) is rejected, and
automatically H 1 (alternative hypothesis) is accepted. It is also shows by the mean
score of post-test was significantly higher than pre-test (66.13 > 33.60). Therefore it
can be stated that by using flash card, students’ speaking skill in descriptive text are
known good.
A. Conclusion
Based on the data analysis and discussion in the previous chapter, the
researcher concluded that using a flash card as a media in teaching speaking
improved students’ speaking skill in descriptive text. After using flash card, there
was a significance difference in students’ speaking skill. It can be proved by seeing
the mean score and standard deviation of pre-test and post-test. The mean score of
pre-test is 33,60 and standard deviation of pre-test is 7,376. While, the mean score
of post test is 66,13 and standard deviation of post-test is 13,426. Furthermore, the
t-test result showed 0,000 which was < significance degree (0,05). It indicated that
H ? was accepted and H ? was rejected. It means that there was a significant
different the students’ speaking skill in pre-test and post-test after giving treatment
through flash card.
In conclusion, the uses of flash card as a media in teaching speaking
improved students’ speaking skill in descriptive text at the tenth grade of SMAN
12 Bone.
B. Suggestion
Based on the research results and conclusion, the researcher would like to
give suggestions as follows:
1. For the English teacher must be creative in managing material that must be
integrated into the classroom.
2. For the improvement of teaching English, the researcher suggest to the English
teacher should use flash card as alternative technique in teaching speaking that
it should be creative to use it in order to make the students more active and
interested in teaching learning process.
3. For the students, should realize that speaking is not as difficult as they think.
Students should not feel shame in speaking activity. They should not be afraid
of making mistakes. The students also are expected to have more practice in
speaking activity.
4. For the other researcher. It can suggested may use as an additional reference for
further researches. Moreover, it is expected to conduct further researches in
different areas and topics
