Observing the Students’ Confidence in Speaking English as a Foreign Language at the Eleventh Grade of SMKN 7 Bone

The main purpose of this research was to observe students’ confidence in
speaking English as a foreign language about their self-introduction. This research
used qualitatif method.To collect the data, the resercher used observation and
interviews. The researcher gave a change to students to make a little concept about
their introduction and speak or perform to introduce themselves and the researcher
observed them by using some indicators in observation instrument to analyze their
performance such as fluency and clarity, pace and flow, posture, eye contact, and
enthusiasm. The researcher used interview section with some questions to get the
reason of each student in their habit when they were perform. The subject of research
was the eleventh grade students of SMKN 7 Bone class XI Multimedia 1, It had 34
students in the class . But the researcher chose15 students for this research.
The result of this research, was only some students who were able to appear
confident, while the other students were not confident when they introduced
themselves, because on the indicator of fluency and clarity many students whose
voice were loud enough and clear enough but there were still mistakes with the
pronunciation of words, on the indicator of pace and flow were too fast and too slow,
on the indicator of posture, on the indicator of eye contact did not maintained
throughout speaking and less eye contact with audience, on the indicator of
enthusiasm looked down and had refused to introduce themselves .
A. Conclusion
Based on the result of finding and discussion in the previous finding
the researcher collected some important information from the eleventh grade
students of SMKN 7 Bone about students confidence in speaking especially
when they introduce themselves in the class. Through observation and
interview instrument in obtaining data that has been done, the researcher can
conclude that among fifteen student of X1 Multimedia 1, only some students
who are able to appear confident, while the other students are not confident
when they introduce themselves, because on the indicator of fluency and
clarity many students whose voice are loud enough and clear enough but there
are still mistakes in the mention of words, on the indicator of pace and flow
are too fast and too slow, on the indicator of posture, on the indicator of eye
contact does not maintain throughout speaking and less eye contact with
audience, on the indicator of enthusiasm looked down and had refused to
introduce themselves. .
B. Suggestion
Based on the result of the data analysis and conclusion, the researcher
proposes some suggestion, as follows:
1. For the Teacher
Considering this research, the researcher suggests to the English teacher
should always motivates the students to Speak English well, she should
make some techniques in teaching in order to cope with the development
of English language especially in teaching speaking. Also give each
student the opportunity to try, practice and practice their self-confidence
especially when they stand in front of many people or in front of theirs
friends.
2. For the Students
Considering this research, the researcher suggests the students to learn
English to be focus because the results of the research show many errors
in the form of mentioning or using words specifically when they are
speaking. The students should always practice their English both with
their friends or their English teacher. Also suggests the student to try,
practice and practice their self-confidence especially when they stand in
front of many people or in front of theirs friends. The students should not
be afraid of making mistakes. They should know they learn from their
mistake.
3. For the Other Researcher
It is expected that the result of the research can give an informative input
about students’ confidence. The researcher believes that there are still
many phenomena that can be revealed in this research. The researcher
expects that this result or research can inspire other researchers to conduct
the research related to enrich the exiting research.
