Using Item Analysis as an Examining English Test Made by English Teacher of SMP Negeri 4 Watampone

This thesis presents research on the activity of analyzing the quality of
English tests through an item analysis program. This research aims to determine the
quality of the test, the extent to which the test can be relied upon to test students'
abilities. This study uses a qualitative method. The sample consisted of an English
teacher at Watampone State Junior High School and an English test that the teacher
made. This thesis is intended to find two problems. The first problem is to find out
the teacher's experience in applying item analysis. Based on the results of
observations and interviews, it was found that the teacher could not do item analysis.
the second problem is to determine the quality of the tests made by the teacher
through item analysis. from the results of the analysis, it was obtained that of the 20
items there were several items that were not valid. Some of them have no effective
options, are very difficult, too easy and even have low negative discrimination. The
analysis showes that the mean score is 7.7, the standard deviation is 1.1. There are 8
proper questions and 12 improper questions. The reliability value is 0.47, which
means the test is not reliable.
A. Conclusion
Based on the discussion, the researcher draw conclusions about the
experience of English teachers at SMP Negeri 4 Watampone in making and
applying item analysis to the tests they made and how the quality of the tests was
analyzed through the item analysis program as follows:
1. Based on the results of the item analysis on the multiple-choice English test
made by the teacher of SMP Negeri 4 Watampone, several invalid items were
obtained. This is because there are some items that have a very low level of
difficulty that makes it easy for students to answer and there are items that are
very difficult for students, besides the number of improper items is greater
than the proper items and the reliability level of the test is low.
2. From the results of interview, it is known that the English teachers of SMP
Negeri 4 Watampone apply item analysis to the tests that they feel need to be
analyzed and they get a positive impact from the results of the analysis, but
unfortunately the item analysis they apply is not the item analysis expected
the researcher, but the teacher only analyzes test quality based on their
prejudices only.
B. Suggestion
Based on the conclusion above, the researcher will give suggestions to all readers
and especially for teachers:
1. For the Teachers
To get good students‟ learning outcomes, approaches and strategies in
teaching are very necessary, but it is important to note that the quality of the
test also plays an important role. With a good test, students can get good test
results as well. To get a good test, teachers need to sort out the tests they
make, namely by analyzing each test item with predetermined stages, not just
prejudice.
2. For the Other Researchers
Especially for future researchers, it is better to start from now on to learn
about the research methodology and this research can be a reference for
making other research related to this research.
