This script presents research about The Effectiveness of Using Authentic
Materials in Teaching Descriptive Text to Improve Students Speaking Ability at The
Eighth Grade Students of SMP Negeri 1 Kajuara. This research used quantitative
method which used pre-experimental research with one group pre-test and post-test.
The researcher used cluster sampling. The sample consisted of 33 students from the
Class VIII A. The researcher gave pre-test, treatments, and post-test. The data were
analyzed by using SPSS 25. Most of students could speak English but they could not
speak with good. The main problems are they think speaking is difficult that made
them could not speak naturally. Regarding the data analysis, this research used test
and questionnaire as instrument. Test was used to analyze the effectiveness of using
authentic materials in teaching descriptive text to improve students’ speaking ability
and the questionnaire was used to identify students’ motivation in learning English by
using authentic materials. This result of this research showed that the students have
good ability in speaking. It can be seen from the comparison data between the mean
score of post-test was significantly higher than pre-test (81.82 > 49.39) and out of the
33 students, 75, 76 % chose that this method enlarge the students’ motivation and
interest speaking in the class. Then the data of pre-test and post-test showed that sig.
(2-tailed) is 0,000 < 0, 05. It can be concluded that by using authentic Materials in
teaching descriptive text, students’ speaking ability are known good.
A. Conclusion
At the end of the research, the post-test was given to measure the influence
of using authentic materials in teaching descriptive text to improve students’
speaking ability. The mean score of pre-test is 49, 39 and the mean score of post-
test is 81, 81. It showed that the mean score students’ of pre-test was higher than
the mean score students’ of post-test.
Based on the result of questionnaire, it conclude that the students’
motivation enlarge during using this media. Out of the 33 students, 75, 76%
choose this media could enlarge their motivation in learning English by authentic
materials in teaching descriptive text improve students’ speaking ability.
B. Suggestions
In view of the fact that the media of authentic materials has been proved to
be effective in teaching descriptive text to improve students’ speaking ability, the
researcher would like to give suggestions as follows:
1. For the teacher
Considering this media, the researcher suggests the English teacher to
apply this media. This media is one of media that could help in
teaching speaking, vocabulary, and several kinds of text (descriptive
text, narrative text, procedure text, etc.
2. For the students
Considering this media, the researcher suggests the students to learn
English by using this media. so that the students will be more
interested and enjoy to study English.
3. For the other researcher
It is suggested that other researcher may use the research results as
information or a reference to conduct the research with the similar
topic in the same design about the effectiveness of using authentic
materials with different.
