Exploring the Students’ British Accent Ability through Harry Potter Movie as A Learning Media: Imitating and Practising the Dialogue at STKIP Muhammadiyah Bon

The objective of this researcher was to explore the implementation of imitating and
practicing the dialogue of Harry Potter movie in encouraging students‟ British accent
ability and to know the students‟ motivation by using this method. The sample of this
research was the students of fourth semester in academic year 2020/2021 at STKIP
Muhammadiyah Bone. Technique of selected sample used is cluster sampling that
consists of 8 students to study English by using audiovisual method as a treatment.
This research is a quantitative research, which used experimental study as a research
design. Generally, there are a lot of students could speak English but they could not
speak with good accent. The significant problems they faced are they still minus in
applying the correct pronunciation and the good intonation because of influenced by
their vernacular dialect that made them could not speak naturally. The researcher used
test and questionnaire as instrument, test was used to explore the implementation of
Harry potter movie to encourage British ability and the questionnaire was used to
identify students‟ motivation in learning English by using the audiovisual method.
The result of the students‟ mean score before and after treatment, the mean score
obtained by the students in the post-test (77,13) is greater than the mean score of the
students in pre-test (69,25). It assumes that the implementation of imitating and
practicing the dialogue of Harry Potter movie are very helpful to encourage students'
British accent ability because there are significant readings from students after
treatment is done.
A. Conclusion
Based on the first research question, the final result of this research shows that
the imitating and practising the dialogue of Harry Potter movie are able to be used in
exploring British accent ability. It proves from the end process of this research that
showed that the mean score of pre-test is 69,25 and the mean score of post-test is
77,13. It shows that the mean score students‟ of pre-test was higher than the mean
score students‟ of post-test.
While based on the second research question, it concludes that Harry potter
movie motivate the students to explore British accent ability. It found from the result
of questionnaire where out of the 8 students, more than 75% chose this method could
enlarge their motivation in learning English by watching Harry Potter movie in
exploring British accent ability.
B. Suggestion
Based on the conclusion above, the researcher put some suggestion as
follows:
1. For Teacher
The teacher should give the students more space to speak up in the class
with some considerations. Firstly, identify the character of students whether
they are shy or confident enough. Secondly, the teacher should give more
material which deals with the students‟ knowledge background. It aims to
engage students‟ motivation in learning. The teacher could assign the students
to explore more resource of English in internet.
In question-answer stream, the teacher had better give the task for
students to be more active by assigning them to discuss material with their fit
partner. However, the most often obstacle appeared is that students were not
confident to speak up by using British accent in sudden and in front of many
people.
2. For Students
The students should realize that speaking skill is not instant skill
acquisition especially when they know that accent as one of the most
important components in speaking is not as easy as other skills. It brings them
to practice regularly. Therefore, they are not supposed to think that speaking
English (British accent) only occurs in the class. They can start by small group
to make simple conversation either inside or outside of class.
The students are supposed to maximize the technology to make all
simpler. They have the Hand Phone, so they can use it to serve the material
such as Harry Potter movie.
3. For Researcher
For the following research, the researcher expects there will be an
innovative way to explore British accent ability inside out more suitable for
students.
In other word, the researcher says that of the accent of Harry potter
movie can be applied in daily habit, for example: when they make a dialogue
with other persons. In other word, the researcher makes a habit of imitating
and practicing the dialogue of Harry Potter movie can give more engagement
to the students.
