A Discourse Analysis of Coherence in the Background of Undergraduate Thesis at English Study Program of IAIN Bone

This research is conducted to analyze the coherence quality of the
backgrounds of undergraduate theses at English Study Program of IAIN Bone based
on their thematic progression. This research design belongs to descriptive qualitative
research that is discourse analysis. The data of this research are five undergraduate
theses at English Study Program of IAIN Bone in year of 2018. The data is obtained
using purposive sampling.
The result of this research reveals that most of the backgrounds of
undergraduate thesis lack coherence because the highest total of percentage level of
coherence at most in less level. A background will not be coherent if the text in it is
not unified whole or new theme created in the middle of the text.
A. Conclusion
Completing this research, coherence quality of the backgrounds of theses
written by the English Study Program at IAIN Bone in year of 2018 is based on
thematic progression. The result shows that all levels of coherence are indicated in
this research; they are good, fair, less, and poor coherences’ quality. From the result
of this research, it is known that 4 of 5 backgrounds of thesis have less level of
coherence and only 1 background of thesis has a fair level of coherence. None of the
backgrounds of the theses has poor level of coherence. It can be concluded that the
coherence quality of the backgrounds of the theses written by the English Study
Program at IAIN Bone in year of 2018 has less level of coherence.
B. Suggestion
Considering the result of this research, it was suggested that, first, reader can
add their knowledge about the theory of how create the coherence text by concerning
the system of theme and rheme and thematic progression. Second, the English
students, especially for the English Study Program of IAIN Bone can enrich their
knowledge and more concern about the system of theme and rheme and thematic
progression pattern in order to create coherent text whole, especially in writing thesis
as a requirement for completing undergraduate degree in the English Study Program.
In addition, the lecturers of English Study Program of IAIN Bone can motivate their
learners to write, especially in writing for academic purpose like thesis and enrich the
knowledge of their learners about the system of theme and rheme and thematic
progression which supposed to be able to create coherent text.
