Motivating Students In Learning English Vocabulary Through The Word Clap Game At The Eighth Grade Of Smpn 1 Sibulue

This research was conducted to find out the students’ motivations and
perceptions toward Word Clap Game as an interactive game in learning English in
Junior High School 1 Sibulue. The research designs used Virtual Classroom and
offline Research. The researcher selected five students by using a purposive
sample. The data collection methods were observation and interview. The
researcher used the qualitative data analysis based on Miles and Huberman.The
result showed that all the students were motivated in learning English using the
game at eighth grade of SMPN 1 Sibulue with various motivations. The researcher
found some types of motivations. Those were integrative motivation such as
having a will to understand the meaning of the songs, intrinsic motivation such as
having a will to speak English easily, and extrinsic motivation such as feeling
relaxed, not being burdened, and being easy to understand the vocabulary. The
perception of the student in learning English using word clap game showed similar
perception. It was mostly said Word Clap Game in learning vocabulary was an
interesting way and very helpful.
A. Conclusion
Based on the finding, it can be concluded that Word Clap Game as an
interactive game has an effect on students' motivations and perceptions in learning
English vocabulary at eighth grade of SMPN 1 Sibulue. The research concludes that
there are two main things revealed, as follow ;
1. Student motivations in learning English vocabulary, are integrative
motivation such as having a will to understand the meaning of the songs,
intrinsic motivation such as having a will to speak English easily, and
extrinsic motivation such as feeling relaxed, not being burdened, and being
easy to understand the vocabulary. Among all those motivations, the
students' motivation dominantly comes from extrinsic motivation. It is
because the Word Clap Game appears as external stimuli for learners to raise
the students' motivation in learning English vocabulary.
2. The perception of the student in learning English using word clap game at
eighth grade of SMPN 1 Sibulue shows similar perception. The students
acknowledged that word clap game in learning vocabulary is very interesting
way and helpful. The use of the word clap game in the class also made the
student easy to understand English vocabulary for some reason. The first
reason, word clap game is very interesting and be able to make students find
new words, and second, it is more interesting and easy to understand. The
last, the students acknowledged that word clap game make them easy to
remember the vocabulary lesson
B. Suggestion
The implementation of the Word Clap Game has been proven more effective.
Therefore, the researcher would like to give some suggestions as follows:
1. For the students
Being aware is that English is an important language to learn. It is an
international language, so you can practice your English knowledge through
Word Clap Game.
2. For the English teacher
The English teacher should be creative to conduct the method in
teaching.

to develop students' motivation in learning English so the English
teacher can use it in their practice in teaching English.
