This research studied an EFL textbook entitled “Be smart in English for grade X of Senior High School Linguistics and Cultural Studies” to expose two essential things within it. Those are the types of culture and cultural meaning represented throughout the texts and images within the EFL textbook. The researcher conducts a qualitative research specifically micro-semiotic analysis with Peirce’s semiotic principal associated with content analysis. The data collected with two main methods, observation and document analysis as this study examines document, the EFL textbook as a source of data.
Theresultofthisstudydisplaysa sufficient cultural content appearance with different proportion. The percentage shows in four types of cultures that there are 25 of source culture appearance (21%), 15 times of target culture appearance (13%), 10 times of International culture appearance (8%), and neutral culture appeared as much 69 times (58%). Then, cultural content that has been analyzed using micro-semiotic analysis reveals that signs within the text and image are explicitly observable so that easy to get cultural meaning. However some images are incompletely in a perfect form.
A.Conclusion
Based on the analysis that had been in the research, the result of this research can be sum up follow:
a.The presentation of the cultural categories shows the domination of neutral culture among target culture, local culture and international culture. The cultural content is mostly dominated by name of place, building, and one’s history life. Neutral culture becomes the highest presentation with 58 %, appearance through image and text in the textbook. As much 21 % occurrence, source culture belongs to the second place. The target culture recorded with 13 % appearance is followed by international culture as much as 8% appearance. With this proportion of cultural content, it brings impact to the student’s cultural knowledge and awareness so the occurrence percentage of the cultural content in the textbook needs to be considered.
b.The micro-semiotic analysis towards the EFL textbook by using Peirce’ principles of semiotic explored and revealed more the culture through signs within image and text (reading passage, conversation, poem, song lyric, and text in the picture). EFL textbook for senior high school learners in Indonesia provides amount of cultural content displayed throughout the signs. Micro-semiotic analysis exposes explicitly the interdependence relation bound in triadic model Representamen, Object and Interpretant where each sign in every images and texts shapes cultural meaning and influence that assists the student to gain more cultural knowledge. However, some cultural contents show the incomplete images so the sign is not clear to identify. It is worried that the lack of cultural knowledge background of the students may cause inaccessibility to images and may have false perception.
B.Suggestion
Regarding to the cultural representation in the textbook, the researcher suggests some points.
1.For textbook writers.
a.They are expected to involve variations of culture in proportional numbers, in this case, the portion of source culture, target culture, international culture and neutral culture. The textbook is not only to develop the student’s ability in linguistic aspect but also cultural aspect. Therefore, the student can be good in performance as international English learner.
b.They have to put the images and texts which presents culture explicitly in order to ease the student to identify the sign of culture within the visual or verbal material.
c.They have to put the task which stimulate student to be in curious in culture, in this case is raising cultural awareness.
2.For the teacher
The teacher should direct their student to be aware of cultural knowledge because culture will help the students good in practicing their English. In addition, the teacher should give more information about the sign of presented culture in the textbook because so that the student are convenient to get understanding of the cultural meaning.
3.For the next researcher
The researcher suggests to the next researcher have to understand the content of the textbook properly before conducting the research so that it will be easier doing the study as they have already known and understood all the cultural elements.
