Error Analysis on the Use of Modal Auxiliary and Similar Expression of Modal (SEOM) in Essay Made by Students of Vernacular English Course Bone

The title of this research is “Error Analysis on the Use of Modal Auxiliary and
Similar Expression of Modal (SEOM) in Essay Made by Students of Vernacular
English Course Bone”. This study purposes to find out the types of errors in using
modal auxiliary and similar expression of modal (SEOM) in essay made by students
of Vernacular English Course Bone. It includes the types of errors in using modal
auxiliary and similar expression of modal. This research conducts at Vernacular
English Course Bone. In this study the research took participants in first level at
Vernacular English Course Bone where included six students. The researcher used
descriptive analysis in form of qualitative to run this research. The first research step
done of the researcher was taking permission to head of Vernacular English Course
and asked the phone number of student's as participants in this research. In doing
research, the researcher gave introduction first and brief material about modal
auxiliary and similar expression of modal and gave student a task to make short essay
about descriptive text by using modal auxiliary and similar expression of modal with
“My Dream Job” as the topic. In the next meeting, the researcher collected all of the
student’s paper and checked their essay and analyz the fault. In analyzing the data,
the researcher used error analysis method identification errors, classification errors,
and evaluation of errors. The research found that there are four types of errors find
they are omission, addition, misformation and misordering. The modal which were
often found wrong in its used "must" and "will ", along with its SEOM of the one that
are "have to ", "be going to", and be able to.
A. Conclusion
Based on the data and the discussion on the previous chapter, the researcher
would like to conclude that the types of errors commonly made by the students which
had been choose as the participants on their essay test are omission, addition,
misformation, and misordering. It can be seen by the table of the previous chapter
that there are errors done about omission (3 errors), addition (1 error), misformation (
4 errors) and misordering (1 error). Each of students of first level of Vernacular
English Course Bone made few errors on the type of errors as mentioned above. It
also can prove by the result of documentation of student paper test.
B. Suggestion
Based on the conclusion above, the researcher put some suggestions to the
teachers and students as follows:
1. For Teacher
However, there are some results of the research that require teacher to make
some adjustments and improvements:
a. Teaches them some materials that the students made errors in their writing.
b. Makes writing about descriptive text.
c. Has most writing done in English class.
d. Discuss the problem of the students’ writing in class.
e. Easily to make students understand about their error.
2. For Students
There will be more lessons hopefully students can be got in applying in
daily learning especially English learning, some of them:
a. Must have more practice to use the right form of modal auxiliary and similar
expression of modal in writing.
b. Discuss the problem in writing with their classmate and teacher.
c. Can know their errors easily by see the sign of paper given by the students.
