The Students’ Ability in Distinguishing the Function of Apostrophe Contraction at The Eleventh Grade of SMAN 14 BONE

The purpose of this research to know the students’ ability in distinguishing the
function of apostrophe contraction. Then, The objective of this research was to
described the students ability in distinguishing the function of apostrophe contraction.
This research applied descriptive quantitative research. The researcher took class XI
IIS 3 that consisted of 27 students as the sample. The sample was taken by using
cluster random sampling. The data of this research was gotten by test. The researcher
analyzed the data by giving score and the frequency of students’ ability classification.
From the analysis, the result showed that no student was categorized into
excellent, From the data analyzing showed that there was no students who
categorized into very poor. There were 10 students who categorized into poor. The
students who categorized into poor, they were three students got score 25, two
students got score 30 and five students who got score 35. And then, there were 10
students who categorized into fair, the students who categorized into fair, they were
three students who got score 45, two students who got score 50 and five students who
got score 55. Then, there was no students who categorized good. And, there were 7
students categorized very good, they were students who got score 85. And the last,
there was no students who categorized into excellent. The total average score of the
students ability in distinguishing the function of apostrophe contraction at the
eleventh grade of SMAN 14 BONE in academic year 2018/2019 was 50, It can be
conclude that the students ability was categorized to fair.
A. Conclusion
After collecting the data and analyzing the result of the research in the
previous chapter, the researcher drew a conclusion about the students‟ ability in
distinguishing the function of apostrophe contraction at eleventh grade of SMAN 14
Bone in the academic year 2018/2019.
The students‟ ability in distinguishing the function of apostrophe
contraction was categorized into fair, since the mean of the students score was 50. It
was because half of students were less pay attention in distinguishing the function of
apostrophe contraction. So, classification indicated that there was no students who
categorized into very poor. There were 10 students who categorized into poor. The
students who categorized into poor, they were three students got score 25, two
students got score 30 and five students who got score 35. And then, there were 10
students who categorized into fair, the students who categorized into fair, they were
three students who got score 45, two students who got score 50 and five students who
got score 55. Then, there was no students who categorized good. And, there were 7
students categorized very good, they were students who got score 85. And the last,
there was no students who categorized into excellent. Therefore, it can be concluded
that students‟ ability in distinguishing the function of apostrophe contraction was
categorized into fair.
B. Suggestion
Considering the result of the research, the researcher would like to give
some suggestions as follow:
1. For English Teacher
a. The teacher should give motivation and attention in the students
writing.
b. The teacher should give more practice about the function of
apostrophe contraction to improve students ability.
c. The teacher may give interesting teaching method I teaching
English in order to make interested in learning English.
2. For Students
a. The students should increase their effort in improving their
knowledge and subject that they learn when they are studying the
foreign language, because the foreign language is not as simple as
like mother tongue, there may rules that should be obey.
b. The students should increase their understanding in distinguishing
the function of apostrophe contraction and do some extra practice
of distinguishing the function of apostrophe contraction in their
writing , in order to improve their ability in distinguishing the
function of apostrophe contraction.
3. For Further Researcher
It necessary to the further researcher to conduct further research with
the some object and different perspective in order aspect of writing.
