Analyzing Students` Perception and Language Preference of Bilingual Use in EFL Classroom Interaction at Senior High School 11 Waj

The purposes of this research is to investigate students` perception in
EFL learning used bilingual, and the students` language preference about
language use as the medium of instruction in EFL classroom interaction. The
participants were 25 students in the first semester at XII MIPA3 in senior high
school 11 Wajo, South Sulawesi Province, Indonesia. This research was designed
in descriptive qualitative research by distributing a questionnaire and conducting
interview as the data collection techniques.
The findings shows that the students` perception of bilingual use in EFL
classroom reveals that the students got many difficulties of the English use as the
medium of instruction in their classroom such as what teacher said was not
understandable, the student had more doubt to ask and interact. Meanwhile using
dominantly Indonesia made them understand the lesson and interact well but in
the other hand they wanted their English improved as well. Therefore, the use of
both their source language (Indonesian language) in learning target language
(English) should be balanced to complement their English also their
understanding of a lesson. And students` language preference in EFL classroom
interaction disclosed that the students prefered bilingual than Indonesian and
English. Bilingual is agreed as much 80%. Meanwhile, 70% the students agreed
Indonesian as a used language and only 52% students chose English.

English. With total percentage of agreement, bilingual is agreed as a used
language as much 80%. Next, as much 70% the students agreed Indonesian as a

B. Suggestion
Based on the result, this study suggests to the next researcher to conduct
a research in more various situations. Hopefully the next researchers can find out
more about the use of bilinguals in EFL classroom interactions. In addition, the
results of this study also give information about students' perceptions and
language preferences especially in senior high school.
