is used to analyze and find solutions to these problems. The research was conducted
at SMA Negeri 13 Bone.
The population of this research is the class XI BAHASA 1. Purposive
sampling technique was used to select a class consisting of 24 students as subjects in
this study. Data was collected by means of questionnaires and interviews, while
observation was used to confirm student answers.
The results of the analysis on the difficulty of understanding comprehension
show that listening is a very difficult skill for students learning foreign languages. It
is based on three factors that affect their hearing, namely listening material, listener
factors, and physical settings. Therefore, pronunciation accent, speaking speed,
insufficient vocabulary, different accent of the speaker, lack of concentration, and
poor recording quality are the main problems faced by the class XI BAHASA 1. It
was found that the main factor influencing students' difficulty in listening
comprehension was the listener factor.
Understanding students' difficulties can motivate and help teachers to develop
effective learning strategies for students to improve listening skills. The results of this
study can also be useful for parties with an interest in this research.
A. Conclusion
Based on the result of data presentation and discussion in the previous
chapter, the researcher came to conclusions. In answering the researcher question
before that was “What problems encountered by students of the eleventh grade of
SMA Negeri 13 Bone in listening comprehension?” it can be concluded that, all
students cannot understand the listening text. They only write the vocabulary they
hear which does not match the writing of the words in the audio. There were several
problems in students' self-study which were found in analyzing their difficulties
which were: lack of vocabulary, poor mastery of grammar, accent, pronunciation,
lack of concentration, speaking speed, anxiety, noisy from outside which was difficult
to avoid due to the absence of a language lab inadequate, inability to apply listening
strategies, poor recording quality. The problems faced by students in listening
comprehension are not only from the listeners themselves but also from the content
material and the listening comprehension environment. Therefore, students should
study hard and practice more to improve their listening comprehension ability.
B. Suggestion
Based on the results of previous studies, listening is one of the difficult skills
for students as foreign language learners. Although students experience various kinds
of problems in listening comprehension, they need to study hard to become better
listeners because listening is one of the important skills that provide input for learners
not only in language learning but also in daily communication. Therefore, the
researchers provide the following suggestions:
1. Students as listeners
The students need to practice their listening not only at school but even at
home intensively to help them overcome their problems about the topic in
listening. Like practicing listening by listening to new topics or listening
to songs, and watching. This will help them to increase their vocabulary
automatically. During the learning process, it is necessary to clarify the
answers to questions and tell the teacher if you do not understand
something. Next, don't forget to apply listening strategies which are the
main points if you want to be successful in listening comprehension tests.
2. English teacher
Given the importance of listening in the process of learning English, it is
important for teachers to help their students become effective listeners. So
that teachers are required to be more creative and understand how the
learning processes by using learning methods in listening. English teachers
should also prepare their students to know the importance of listening
skills, it will train them to ask and answer. Teachers also need to be aware
of students' psychology. Anxiety, boredom will interfere with their
learning and it shows as a barrier in listening to students' comprehension
tests. In addition, teachers are more aware of the problems faced by their
students in academics to find good strategies for teaching so that students
become better listeners.
3. The other researcher
For other researchers, it is suggested that other researchers can use the
research results as information or references to conduct research on the
same topic to find out the problems faced by students in listening
comprehension. Don't forget to take notes and photo during research.
