English drama as a English learning media in developing students‟ speaking ability

This study purposes to know the use of English drama as a learning media in
developing students‟ speaking ability. Based on the purpose, the research intended to
answer this research question:“What are the students‟ perceptions towards the
implementing English drama as a learning media developing students speaking ability
at STKIP Muhammadiyah Bone?”. The researcher chose STKIP Muhammadiyah
Bone as the place of doing research where she takes students of the fifth semester
English major as the participant. In doing this study, the researcher also used
descriptive analysis in form of qualitative. The first research step done of the
researcher is observation, by doing an observation. The researcher got information
about the situation of the campus, how about the students‟ condition, and the quality,
the researcher also observed students responses when applying the research that was
about students drama performance. On the observation section, the researcher
observed the students speaking ability during doing drama performance related to the
speaking ability that are vocabulary, pronunciation, fluency and self-confidence.
Besides that, the researcher also used interview as the additional data. The interview
included four questions related to the students‟ English experience, the effect of
drama for students before and after performance. After doing observation and also
interview, it found that there is a development of students‟ speaking ability after
doing drama performance and also there are presented some good responses by the
participants toward the use of English drama as a learning drama in developing
students‟ speaking ability.
A. Conclusion
Based on the finding, it can be concluded that the students showes a positive
response toward the implementation of English drama as a learning media in
developing students speaking ability at STKIP Muhammadiyah Bone. it is proven by
the of observation and interview that have been done in research process. The result
of observation and also interview showes the positive responses by the students, it
can be seen from the observations of students where from some English
conversations spoken by students in the drama performance only a few errors are
obtained both in terms of vocabulary elements, pronunciation, smoothness and
confidence. The statement is also supported by the results of interviews to some
students where they show that they have better progress after performing the drama
than before there was such an activity. So, overall the researcher can conclude that
the answer to the research question get a positive response from students related to
the application of drama as a learning medium in improving students' speaking
ability.
B. Suggestion
In learning speaking English, the students need practice and theory to
complete their knowledge and ability in speaking. The researcher recommends to the
next researcher as additional reference material to create a better teaching and
learning process. This research applied English drama as learning media to students'
speaking ability. It is hoped that other researchers provide more ways to balanPce
practice and theory so that the students does not only know how to speak English
well.
