Retelling Stories Through Series Pictures As English Learning Materials to Develop Indonesian Senior High School Students’ speaking Ability.

This study purposes to know the use of retelling stories through series pictures as
English learning materials in developing Indonesian Senior High School students’
speaking ability. Based on the purpose, the research intended to answer this
questions, “How is Indonesian senior high school students’ speaking ability to retell
stories through series pictures as English learning materials?” and “How is
Indonesian senior high school students’ understanding in retelling stories through
series pictures as English learning materials?” The researcher chose SMKN 7 Bone in
academic year 2019/2020 where the five students of the eleventh grade taken as the
participants. In doing this study, the researcher also used descriptive analysis in form
of qualitative. The researcher adopts virtual classroom research because of the
COVID-19 uses the Whatsaap application to create a learning group that can be
accessed by students to run this research. In this research, the researcher uses
observation, interviews and documentation. The first research step done of the
researcher is observation, by doing an observation. The researcher will analyze the
result of students’ speaking about their pronunciation and also grammar. It uses to
know the students’ speaking ability in retelling story through series pictures. Besides
that, the researcher also used interview, it caused because the researcher will give
some questions in interview section for 3 questions about their understanding in
retelling story through series pictures. The questions contain the abilities, difficulties,
and understanding that the students will make in their speaking retelling story. There
is also a documentation section that will collect school files that consist of teaching
materials, students’ task, attendance, and pictures. After doing observation,
interviews and also documentation, it found that there is a change find after applying
the research, in simply the researcher concludes that retelling stories through series
pictures as English learning materials can develop students' speaking ability. Because
the students get knowledge about how to retell the story well and also retelling story
through series pictures can build students' confidence in speaking. It can also increase
students' understanding in learning a story.
A. Conclusion
Based on the result of analysis and discussion in the previous chapter, the
researcher concluded in following description below:
1. Retelling stories through series pictures as English learning materials can
develop students' speaking ability. Because the students get knowledge about
how to retell the story well. In student practice, they get some errors such as
pronunciation errors and grammar. With those wrong answers, they found new
insights, voices, values and impacts on their speaking ability. Even though after
retelling the story through series pictures the students showed improvement in
their speaking, but their knowledge was still limited about correct pronunciation
and grammar. Therefore, retelling stories through series pictures can help the
students easily tell related stories.
2. The student’s understand after retelling stories through series pictures can be
seen from the results of student’s interviews that retelling story through series
pictures can build students' confidence in speaking. It can also increase
students' motivation in learning a story. The use of series pictures helps the
students in learning speaking ability. The students gets new knowledge when
retelling stories such as pronunciation and grammar correctly. The students can
know some verbs in the past. Retelling stories through series pictures can
improve imagine, focus their thoughts and clues on the story.
B. Suggestion
In learning speaking English, the students need practice and theory to
complete their knowledge and ability in speaking. The researcher recommends to the
next research as additional reference material to create a better teaching and learning
process. This research applied retelling stories through series pictures as learning
material to students' speaking ability. It is hoped that other researchers provide more
ways to balance practice and theory so that the students does not only know how to
speak English fluently but how to speak English well in correct pronunciation and
grammar.
