An Error Analysis On The Use Of Cohesive Device In Writing Essay: A Study At The Eighth Grade Of Smpn 3 Sibulue

The objective of this researcher is to know the students’ errors and also the factors
caused students made errors faced by the eleventh grade students in using cohesive
device when writing descriptive essay. This research was conducted in SMPN 3
Sibulue. The researcher used descriptive writing essay with qualitative approach. The
population of this research was the eighth grade of SMPN 3 Sibulue. While total
samples was 7 students. Descriptive essay test and interview were the instruments of
this research in gathering data. The result of this research shows that the types of
errors are found of the eight students of SMPN 3 Sibulue in using cohesive device
were reference (they occur in the form of personal reference, demonstrative reference,
and comparative reference), substitution (It was occurred in the form of nominal), and
conjunction (they occur in additive conjunction, adversative conjunction, and
temporal conjunction). While the factors are found dominant caused by the eighth
students of SMPN 3 Sibulue are about students have not got clear understanding
about cohesive device when it used in writing essay especially descriptive essay.
From this research, the researcher suggests that the teacher should give more
exercises or practices about cohesive device.

Conclusion
Based on the data analysis and discussion above, the researcher came to
conclusions. They were as follows:
1. The types of errors were found of the eight students of SMPN 3 Sibulue in
using cohesive device were reference (they occurred in the form of personal
reference, demonstrative reference, and comparative reference,), substitution
(It was occurred in the form of nominal), and conjunction (they occurred in
additive conjunction, adversative conjunction, and temporal conjunction).
2. The factors were found dominant caused by the eighth students of SMPN 3
Sibulue were about students had not got clear understanding about cohesive
device when it used in writing essay especially descriptive essay.
B. Suggestions
There are some suggestions that the researcher can propose after doing the
research as follows:
1. The teacher should give more explanation and also practice to the students
about writing descriptive essay by using correct cohesive device.
2. The teacher should search some information about strategies or method in
teaching cohesive device that can make the students interest in translating the
text and it will overcome the problem of the students face in writing cohesive
device.
