The Effectiveness of Using Textbook Adaptation in Teaching Vocabulary at the Second Grade Students of SMPN 2 Tellu Siattinge

This thesis presents the research about The Effectiveness of Using
Textbook Adaptation in Teaching Vocabulary at the Second Grade Students of
SMPN 2 Tellu Siattinge. This research used quantitative method which used pre-
experimental research with one group pre-test and post-test design. The researcher
used cluster sampling. The sample consisted of 22 students from the VIII A of
SMPN 2 Tellu Sattinge. The data on the students vocabulary were analyzed by
using SPPS. The instrument in this research was pre-test, treatment and post-test
by using textbook.
In the following days, the researcher implemented from material
adaptation. The readers can be seen from the comparison data between the mean
score of post-test was significantly higher than pre-test (82,9545 > 65,1818). The
result of sig. (2-tailed) of paired sample t test (.000) is smaller than 0,05. Thus, H 1
(Alternative hypothesis) is accepted and H 0 (Null hypothesis) is rejected. It
assumes that the implementation of using English textbook entitled “When
English Rings a Bell” for grade VIII Junior High School in teaching vocabulary is
effective, because there are significant data from students after treatment is done.
D. Conclussion
Based on the findings and the data analyzing that have explained in the
chapter 3, the researcher concludes that students’ vocabulary using textbook
adaptation is effective at the Second Grade Students’ of SMPN 2 Tellu
Siattinge.The data shows that the students’ vocabulary before applying using
textbook is still low but it increase after applying using textbook is more improve
than by vocabulary text. It can be proved by the mean score of pre-test and post-
test.The mean score of students’ pre-test is 65,1818 and in post-test is 82,9545.
The students’ standard deviation of pre-test is 16,50292 and the post-test is
15,95075. It shows that the mean score of post-test is higher than the mean score
in pre-test 82,9545>65,1818. The result of sig. (2-tailed) of paired sample t test
(.000) is smaller than 0,05. Thus, H 1 (Alternative hypothesis) is accepted and H 0
(Null hypothesis) is rejected . Thus, it can be said that using textbook adaptation
entitled "When English Rings a Bell" is effective in teaching students’ vocabulary
at SMPN 2 Tellu Siattinge.
E. Suggestion
In order to improve the students’ vocabulary, the researcher gives suggestion
to all readers, especially to English teacher and to the students as follows :
1. The English teacher should be apply an appropriate technique in teaching-
learning process that effectively can improving students’ vocabulary. Thus,
using textbook and vocabulary text is recommended.
2. The English teacher should be creative to manage the teaching material and the
classroom and do not use monotonous way in teaching vocabulary speaking so
that the students more interested and the english teacher give motivation to
study in the classroom.
3. The students are expected to increase their interest and ability in learning
vocabulary. They can know many vocabulary to facilitate them in learning
vocabulary because this research gives many benefits as explained previously.
4. For the other researcher. It is suggested that other researcher may use the
research results as information or a reference to conduct the research with the
similar topic in the same design about the increase students’ vocabulary
mastery through using textbook with different subject.
