Students Self-Reflection in Learning English at New English Course: a Diary Study

The focus of this research was to find out how students’ self-reflection in
learning English and how the result of students’ self-reflection through
documentation in learning English at New English Course. In this research, the
researcher used qualitative approach and combination of virtual classroom research.
There were three data collection method; self-reflection diary, interview, and
documentation. Meanwhile, for data analysis, the researcher conducted content
analysis.
Based on the qualitative data from self-reflection diary, students were given a
task to write a diary. It revealed that students could reflect their selves during learning
English. In students’ self-reflection, they reflected the materials about grammar,
speaking, and vocabulary. Besides that, they explained the progress that they had
reached during learning English. Meanwhile, based on the interview activity, all
students revealed that self-reflection gave positive impact to students. Through self-
reflection in diary, students more easily remember the lesson that had been learnt
when learning English at New English Course.
More from content analysis showed that the result of students’ self-reflection
and documentation had a difference. That was showed by students’ diary explained
more materials than in documentation of their note book. From interview activity,
students stated that they did not have time to write all materials when learning
English, but when they was commanded to reflect their selves, they could remember
quite well. It proved that self-reflection diary gave good influence to students.
Nonetheless, self-reflection in diary also had a weakness, such as the grammar in
writing diary was not too good, and the process of collecting data needed a long time.
A. Conclusion
Based on the result of analysis and discussion in the previous chapter, the
researcher concluded in following description below:
1. The students could reflect their selves in learning English through a diary.
From the interview activity, the students reflected their selves through relearn
the lessons that they have learned. From students’ diary, students reflected the
materials during learning English at New English Course. They explained
about grammar, speaking, and vocabulary. Besides that, they also explained
the progress that they had gotten. This proved that through a diary, students
could reflect their selves successfully. Then, the result of students’ reflection
and documentation of their notebook had the differences. This was proved by
students’ reflection in diary explained more materials than the documentation
in notebook.
2. After the process writing diary about students’ self-reflection, students argued
that students’ self-reflection through a diary study gave positive impact to
students. Through reflection in diary, students can recall the lessons, evaluate
their selves about the things that they had learned and also more easily
remember, analyze, and consider an event that has occurred even got new
insight. Nonetheless, reflection in diary had some weakness, such as grammar
was not concerned in writing a diary and the researcher needed long time to
collect the data.
B. Suggestion
In this research, this study also had a weakness such as in grammar, need a
long time to collect data. So, for the next researcher, the researcher hoped to focus
the grammar if want to use a diary study, and be more passion to collect data from
this study.
