Effect of Using Inquiry Based Learning (IBL) Method on Indonesian Students’ Motivation in Speaking Ability at the Eleventh Grade of SMAN 3 Bone

Inquiry based learning (IBL) method has been popularity in science both of
national or international research and many researchers attracted to discuss it
including this research. This study discuss about the effectiveness of using IBL
method on Indonesian students‟ motivation in speaking ability. However, this
research focuses in teaching IBL method to motivate students in learning speaking.
This research is analyzed in qualitative approach with virtual classroom
design. The researcher takes a place at SMAN 3 Bone of students in eleventh MIPA 7
grade. In collecting the data, the researcher uses observation and interview activities.
Textual and Thematic Content Analysis uses to analyze the finding. This research
shows that inquiry based learning method has effect to the students‟ motivation in
learning speaking. The students were more active to take a part in learning process,
be critical thinking, get meaningful understanding and form the students‟ character.
As addition, all students clarify that IBL method is effective to promote their
speaking in learning process. But the students are difficult to discover directly the
material because they do not have habitually to do this. Consequently, the teachers
should motivate the students in learning process.
A. Conclusion
Based on the finding, it can be concluded that Inquiry Based Learning
(IBL) method has effect toward students‟ motivation in speaking ability at
Eleventh MIPA 7 grade of SMAN 3 Bone. It is proven by the data of observation
and interview activities. As long as of teaching and learning process, the students
looked actively to give comment, question, response and they enjoyable the
learning process. They are enthusiasm to take a part in promoting their speaking
ability. IBL method also contributes toward students‟ meaningful understanding
where the students be critical thinking in analyzing the lesson and they are easier
to understand it. As addition, IBL method is able to form students‟ positive habit
and characteristic. It is shown that the implementation IBL method is effective to
motivate students in practicing their speaking ability. But other condition, IBL
method is unfamiliar for the students so they are having difficulties to discover
material directly without the teacher‟s guidance and direction.
B. Suggestion
In fact, the implementation of IBL method has been proven more effective.
Therefore, the researcher would like to give some suggestions as follows:
1. For the students
Being aware that speaking is an important skill in English
communication. The students should try to speak individually or in group such
as doing conversation in daily life because it can stimulate to speak up more
and get natural communication.
2. For the English teacher
1. The English teacher should be creative to conduct the method in teaching.
2. The English teacher should give more chance to students for practicing their
speaking in learning English as target language.
3. The implementation of IBL method is proven effective to motivate students
in speaking ability so the English teacher can use it in their practicing in
teaching English.
3. For the next researcher
This study discusses about the effect of using IBL method toward
students‟ motivation in speaking ability. Hopefully the next researchers will
carry out the difference object in using IBL method. They can adopt widely
IBL method with focusing in students‟ personality and character shaping.
