Duolingo Application as a Mobile Assisted-Language Learning (MALL) to Enhance Students’ Translation Ability at Vernacular English Course Bone

This research is conducted to find out Duolingo application as a Mobile-
Assisted Language Learning (MALL) enhances students’ translation ability at
Vernacular English Course Bone. The approach of research uses qualitative research
and the design research is Virtual Classroom. This research only uses one basic class
as participants with four meetings. The data collection methods are observation,
interview, and documentation. Then, the data analysis uses textual analysis and
content analysis to finish the research questions.
Based on the qualitative data, the students’ action in learning process get
enhancement. The result shows there is a positive effect of students’ ability in
translation simple sentences through Duolingo application. At first, the students get
some incorrect answers in their practicing, but the incorrect answers make the
students getting more idea for the next sentences. Furthermore, the students’
interview answers show why they get the incorrect answers and what kind of
translation knowledge that they get. The students get more idea in translating
sentences with remembering the structure, to be, to do, pronoun, verb, and other word
that students confused to use before practicing with Duolingo.
Based on the observation and the interview, the result of the research shows
that the use of Duolingo in teaching translation has many positive effects to the
students, such as: the students are more motivated in learning, make students easy to
understand the material, getting the opportunity for fair turn in practicing the
material, less boredom in learning, getting encourage for new ideas, facilitated in
remembering and practicing translation in daily life. They also learn enthusiastically
in teaching learning activities. The students show positive attitude toward the using
of Duolingo.
Although the students’ get some advantages especially in their translation, but
Duolingo application has an impact that made students translate sentences without
punctuation. It gives this application a disadvantage to use in practicing translation.
Duolingo application needs some updates to use in practicing translation in English
sentence. It can be a note for the next researcher to apply and research this application
intensely for translation ability.
A. Conclusion
Based on the result of analysis and discussion in the previous chapter, the
researcher concluded in following description below:
1. Duolingo application as a Mobile-Assisted Language Learning (MALL)
enhances the students’ translation ability by getting a basic translation with
basic sentences. In students’ practicing, they get some practicing with
Duolingo that have some incorrect answers. By their incorrect answer, they
get new insight, voice, value, and also impact for their translation knowledge.
Although, it shown students’ enhancement after using Duolingo app in
practicing translation, students still limited in their translation knowledge.
Beside the impact of Duolingo app that does not has punctuation in practicing
translation, students also need more practices with the other sentences.
2. Students’ perception about Duolingo application shows more positive than
negative comments such as the students are more motivated in learning; more
skillful because the interest of learning increases; easy to understand the
material; giving the opportunity to all students to get a fair turn in practicing
the material; eliminate boredom in learning; enhance their idea of the new
ideas in translation; and facilitate students in remembering also practice the
material in daily life. Therefore, Duolingo has some disadvantages; the using
of punctuation in each sentences and online practicing only. Duolingo
application needs an update in some parts to be a perfect tool in learning
English. The researcher finds out that Duolingo application can help students
who have basic knowledge in English, it is not only about translation but
students can increase their vocabularies, make simple sentences, and do
pronunciation practices.
B. Suggestion
In basic knowledge of English, students need more practices than getting
theory to make students understand how to apply the theory such as doing
translation. The students do not need some materials that make them confused, but
it is easy to forget. Duolingo can help them make enjoyable studying and make
students get more idea in practicing. However, the researcher recommends to use
the other application for practicing translation, because Duolingo application still
has disadvantages such as; there is not punctuation in practicing translation, there
are some sentences that has over words, and also it does not have offline
practicing. Duolingo application needs some updates to use in practicing
translation in English sentence.
