This thesis examines research on Analysis of the Students Error in the Use
of Simple Past Tense in Writing Movie Reviews: A Study at New English Course.
It is undeniable that as a human being, everyone always makes errors. Of course
they want to get rid of the error. This study aims to determine the types of errors
and factors that cause students do errors in writing. Therefore, this study adheres
to a qualitative method. Whit this method, the researcher can categorize and
analyze errors made by students. The data was collected in two activities, called
test and interview. This study focused on students’ errors in four categories,
namely omission, addition, selection, and ordering.
From the result of this study, the researcher found that students often made
errors in selection. There are also students who used the nominal but did not put
an important element, namely to be (was/were). Most of their fault lied in the
selection and the rest in omission. As for the factors that caused them to make
errors, it is because they did not know much about the verb two (v2), so they used
the verb one (v1). There were also students who often forgot the form of simple
past tense which caused them to get some errors. Furthermore, the researcher
concluded the factor of the students’ error into seven kinds. They were ignorance
of the verb two, form overflow, incomplete application of rules,
misunderstanding, unknown the rules, difficulty in distinguishing words, and lack
of vocabulary.
A. Conclusion
From the result obtained from analysis and discussion in the previous
chapter, the researcher would conclude as follow:
1. The factor of the students‟ error in the use of simple past tense in writing
movie reviews was found. The researcher concluded seven factors that
occurred in the students writing. They were ignorance of the verb two, form
overflow, incomplete application of rules, misunderstanding, unknown the
rules, difficulty in distinguishing words, and lack of vocabulary.
2. The students‟ types of error in the use of simple past tense in writing movie
reviews were selection and omission. All of them had done errors in
selection in writing. They used a word that was not correct in the form of
simple past tense. In other was an omission. Some students did not put one
element in the simple past tense form. So, they got an error in their writing.
B. Suggestion
Writing is a communication tool that is often used by people. Besides
that, writing is very important in the world of education. In English education,
of course, students cannot escape from tenses, especially the simple past tense.
Simple past tense is used to talk about events or activities in the past. However,
because the simple past tense form uses a verb two, many of the students do not
master the simple past tense. They are disturbed by verb changes, especially
irregular verbs.
Therefore, as a student in the English Education Department, students
are expected to be more active in learning tenses, especially the simple past
tense. So, it will be easy to string words and make sentences in the right format.
