The Effectiveness of Online Learning to Teach Student Vocabulary at Eleventh Grade Of SMAN 16 Bone

The aim of this research is to know the effectiveness of online learning
through Whatsapp to teach students vocabulary mastery and find the student
interaction in learning vocabulary by online learning through Whatsapp for eleventh
grade of SMAN 16 Bone. In this research, the researcher used qualitative approach
and purposive sampling. The research adopt virtual classroom research because of
the COVID-19 uses the Whatsapp application to create a leaning group that can be
accessed by students to run this research. And the researcher uses interviews and
observation.
The first thing the researcher has done interview, by interviewed a teacher
with five questions and five students with four questions. Then the researcher has
observed four meetings over four weeks after doing interviews and observation. It
found that online learning not effective to teach vocabulary mastery through
Whatsapp because it do not make students interested and active in learning. Then
students interactions in learning via Whatsapp is not disciplined and communicative
during learning process. It cause the network factors is not good and facilities are not
supported.
A. Conclusion
Based on the result of data presentation and discussion in the previous
chapter, the researcher came to conclusions. In answering the first researcher question
before, that is “how is effectiveness online learning through WhatsApp to teach
vocabulary?” the researcher find the result of interview conclude that the students
vocabulary mastery after teaching through online learning by using WhatsApp is not
effectiveness in teaching vocabulary mastery and cannot make students interested and
active in study.
To support the results of the answers to the first research question, the researcher
conclude the results from the observation to answer the second research questions, it
is “what kind of students interaction in learning vocabulary by online learning
through WhatsApp?” the results of the observation conclude that the presence of
students is active but the students are not disciplined in filling in absences and less
participate in doing assignments. Then the facilities do not support online learning
process. The result of student interactions during online learning is undisciplined and
uncommunicative.
B. Suggestion
In view of the fact that online learning is not effective in teaching students‟
vocabulary mastery, the researcher tries to give some suggestion follow:
1.The teachers could use online learning in teaching vocabulary mastery.
Therefore, the teachers must accept the fact that online finds interactions
between them that were less effective in online learning and the teacher
were always stimulated the students‟ interest and motivate them in learning
vocabulary mastery also the teacher should be creative.
2.The students of SMAN 16 Bone at the eleventh grade can improve their
interest in English, especially in vocabulary mastery through online
learning. This method is really helpful to the teacher and the students in this
pandemic period.
3. For the future researcher, it is suggested that future researcher may used the
research results as information or a reference to conduct the research with
the similar topic in the same design to know the effectiveness online
learning in teaching vocabulary with different method or way.
