Reading Poems as A Strategy to Improve English Pronunciation Ability on Segmental Feature and Supra-segmental Feature at The Eleventh Grade Students of SMA Negeri 13 Bone

The purpose of this research is to investigate the improvement of students’
English pronunciation ability through reading poem strategy. The sample of this
research is the students of eleventh grade of Language Class in academic year
2017/2018 at SMA Negeri 13 Bone. They are selected by cluster sampling that
consists of 32 students to study English pronunciation by using poem as a treatment.
Regarding the data analysis, this research uses test to analyze the
improvement of students’ English pronunciation ability through reading poems
strategy and the questionnaire is used to identify students’ interest in learning English
by using poems. The mean score in pre-test and post-test increases 49,66 to 66,09
after learning English pronunciation through reading poems and out of the 32
students, 90,62% choose that this strategy to enlarge the students’ motivation in
learning English pronunciation.
A. Conclusion
At the end of the research, the post-test was given to measure the influence of
using reading poem as a strategy to improve students’ English pronunciation ability.
The mean score of pre-test is 49,66and the mean score of post-test is66,09. It shows
that the mean score of students’ pre-test is higher than the mean scoreof students’
post-test.
Based on the result of questionnaire, the researcher concludes that the
students’ motivation enlarge during using this method. Out of the 32 students,
90,62% choose this strategy could improve their interest in learning English by
reading poems to improve English pronunciation ability.
B. Suggestion
In view of the fact that reading poems has been proved to be effective in
teaching to improve students’ English pronunciation ability, the reseacher would like
to give suggestions as follows:
1. For the teacher
The researcher suggests to the teachers to be more innovative and
more creative to choose and use media, strategy and method in teaching
because there are many thing that can be used, one of them is poem. The
teacher should know how to combine media and strategy as good as possible
so, the learning process will be more interesting.
2. For the students
The researcher recommends to the student to use reading poems as a
strategy in learning English because there are many elements of language that
can be learnt such as pronunciation, vocabulary and also literature.
3. For researcher
It is suggested that other researcher may use the research results as
information or a reference to conduct the research with the similar topic in the
same design about reading poems as strategy to improve English
pronunciation ability with different subject.
