The Effectiveness of Cooperative Learning To Improve The Students’ Vocabulary at SMPN 8 Watampone

The aim of this study was to investigate whether cooperative learning is effective in
improving students' vocabulary mastery at SMPN 8 Watampone. This study utilized a
qualitative research approach. Respondents in this study is an English teacher and students of
class VII. The data in this study were collected by interviewing teachers and students. Then
proceed with the vocabulary tests to students in teams to find out how the students' mastery
of vocabulary. The results showed that cooperative learning methods is effective to improve
students' mastery of vocabulary. Environment and background of students who are less
familiar with the English language becomes a factor of students trouble mastering vocabulary
well. With the cooperative learning, help students in mastering vocabulary to the optimum.
The learning process that is packed with the mutual cooperation among students (cooperative
learning), make active learning takes place. Weak students assisted by students who have
better skills.
A. Conclusion
Based on the result of the research that had been done in the research entitled “The
Effectiveness Of Cooperative Learning To Improve The Student’s Vocabulary At SMPN 8
Watampone”, it can be conclude that :
1. Cooperative learning method gave more influence to improve vocabulary mastery
to student. It can be seen from the data and findings in the field that showed
increased student learning outcomes. individualized learning much left by the
teacher for not much help students who are weak in mastering the lesson.
Cooperation among students in learning the game is reflected in the assignment or
the teacher, all students actively involved. Weak students have contributed with the
help of a student’s smart friends. assessment group became the benchmark by
becoming teachers because each student in the group is responsible for the success
of the group. In SMPN 8 Watampone, many teachers use cooperative learning
model of STAD. STAD divides the students into learning teams consisting of four
different levels of ability, gender, and ethnic background. Teachers deliver lessons,
the students work on their team to ensure that all team members have mastered the
lesson. Furthermore, all students was given quiz on the material independently. At
that time, they were not allowed to help each other. the students was given points
based on the level of progress achieved by the students compared the results they
achieved before. Points are then summed to obtain the team score, and the team that
successfully meet certain criteria earns certificates or other awards.
2. Usually, the difficulties faced by students is in terms of a lack of mastery of
vocabulary that the maximum should be owned by all students. In mastering the
English language, is essential for every student learn to enrich themselves with the
vocabulary. Then, obstacles often perceived is an environment that does not support
the students to learn English more intense. learn english only those many felt only
in the classroom. So, it takes a vigorous effort by teachers in realizing the
environment, especially in schools so that students want to learn English as much as
possible.
B. Suggestion
There are some suggestion for teacher and student in order to improve their ability in
vocabulary mastery :
1. Teachers are expected to use more type of cooperative learning like Several types of
cooperative learning are Jigsaw, NHT, TAI, Think-Pair-Share, Picture and Picture,
Problem Solving, Problem Posing, TGT, CIRC, and Cooperative Script. as a
teaching strategy, especially in teaching vocabulary. Because by using variation of
cooperative learning type, teacher can more enrich their lesson plan with many
option to make student’s vocabulary result well. The strategy stimulates student’s
brain in arrange sentences.
2. Teacher are expected to develop the teaching of vocabulary mastery by increasing
the exercise in vocabulary. Teacher should give more attention to the students in
vocabulary. Finally, teacher are expected to motivate to the students in vocabulary
in order they can mastery in vocabulary.
3. For the student, they should interest in English first. So they will feel enjoy along
teaching learning process by cooperative learning method.
