The use English comics to Highlight the Students’ Speaking Ability in Story Retelling at SMPN 1 Tellu Siattinge

The purpose of this research was to investigate the use English comic to
highlight the students speaking ability in story retelling and to know the students’
motivation by using this method. The sample of this research was the students of
nineth grade in academic year 2018 at SMPN 1 Tellu siattinge.
They were selected by cluster sampling that consists of 17 students to study
English
by using a test namely speaking test to find out the students’ speaking ability in the
class. This research is a quantitative research, which the researcher gave pre-test and
post-test, while the data obtained through test were done with mean score and the
formula of t-test.
The result of the study shown that ability of the students at the nineth grade at
SMPN 1 Tellu siattinge in speaking through English comic, fairly good (29,41%),
good (52,95%), and very good (17,64%).
From the data be concluded that teaching speaking through English comic
could highlight the ability of the students at SMPN 1 Tellu siattinge in speaking.
The aim of this research could be seen of the teachers’ ways in teaching
especially in speaking lesson. The teachers will use English comics as a media in the
process of speaking lesson therefore the students’ speaking ability will highlight.
A. Conclusion
Based on the data analysis and discussion in the previous chapter, the
researcher concludes that result of this research shows that studying speaking ability
through English Comic is one material that can highlight students’ speaking ability. It
can be seen of the students of the nineth grade of SMPN 1 Tellu siattinge that they
have prior ability of speaking before applying English Comic is still low, the
researcher was proved the data that the most of students got poor and very poor score
classification with mean score of students’ pre-test was 34,13. The students’ speaking
ability applying English Comic is significantly highlight their ability of speaking, it
was showed by the data that most of them got fairly good score with mean score of
students’ post-test was 84,56.
B. Suggestions
In view of fact that the application English Comic teaching speaking ability,
has been proved in highlight the students’ speaking ability, the researcher would like
to give suggestions as follows:
1. For the teacher
a. The teacher should be creative to manage the material and the classroom
for teaching speaking ability such as applying English Comic to
highlight students’ ability in speaking.
b. The teacher should give aware to the students that learning speaking is
one of ability that important in English language’
c. The English teacher should apply this activity as one of the ways to
highlight students’ speaking ability to the English learning.
2. For the students:
a. The students of the nineth grade of SMPN 1 Tellu Siattinge have to
highlight their skill in English ability, especially speaking ability.
b. For the other researcher, it is suggested that other researcher may use the
research result as information or a reference to conduct the research with
the similar topic in the same design to highlight the students’ Speaking
ability with different subject.
