An Analysis of Students’ Errors Trough Dictation as a Testing Device of Vocabulary Transcription The Case Study of Eighth Year in SMPN 2 Barebbo

A test is an important device for teachers and for learners; for teachers in
that it helps to assess the students' in SMPN 2 Barebbo performance and for
learners in that it helps them to discover the areas of weakness and strength in
their performances.
Dictation is one of the integrative tests that have proved their proficiency
in measuring different language skills. Like vocabulary transcription, listening
comprehension and spelling . It is a vocabulary in test (50 words) which listened
from the sound sistem with record by the voice the native speaker three times at a
normal speed. The students' task is to write down what the speaker said in the
second time. However, experienced instructors in the field of SMPN 2 Barebbo
realise that student have many errors in vocabulary. Hence, the present study aims
at identifying, classification and explaining the errors that SMPN 2 Barebbo
students make during applying dictation tests. The sample of the study is 6
students randomly chosen from the eight-year students at the SMPN 2 Barebbo
during the academic year 2016/2017. The test is submitted to a jury of specialists
to ensure its validity.
The test results revealed that the sample subjects have many errors which
the researcher classified into comprehension, grammatical and spelling errors.
Spelling errors formed the largest percentage of the total number of errors which
are, in turn, classified into subcategories
A. Conclusion
Based on the result of data analysis in the previous chapter, the researcher
concludes that:
Classification of dictation errors made by the students in using vocabulary
transcription as a testing device:
1. what are the student errors’ errors trought dictation as a testing device of
vocabulary transcription.
a. The level of eight years SMPN 2 BAREBBO students in the college of
Basic Education in dictation is poor. The total sampling of these research counsist
six student, each of student got total number; GN 39 errors ( 78 % ), MS 32 errors
( 64 % ), AF 36 errors ( 72 % ), AY 30 errors ( 60 % ), DN 35 errors ( 70 % ), MS
33 errors ( 66 % ). The total number frequent and percentage of each student
result low level because they got height percentage vocabulary errors.
b. Eight years SMPN 2 BAREBBO students' writing, listening and
vocabulary are weak. In dictation test consist of writing, listening, and vocabulary
in english. And result of the research student low abilty in listening sklill.
c. Spelling errors are the most frequent ones in eight years SMPN 2 Barebbo
tudents' dictation.
d. Students' comprehension errors reveal their difficulties in perception and
poor vocabulary repertoire.
e. Students' poor standard in dictation gives an inadequate indicator of their
standard in other skills such as writing and listening.
f. Students fail to pay attention to the context in which the words occur.
B. Suggestion
The researcher gives suggestion to all readers and especially for
teacher or lecturer that and students:
1. For the teachers
a. The teachers should give more practices dictation of English vocabulary so
that the students will understand with English vocabulary.
b. They should pay attention more on students’ English vocabulary trough
dictation (listening and writing) when teaching-learning process is going on.
c. They should to know the English vocabulary trough (listening and wriiting)
ability of each student.
d. They should always motivate the students to learn English vocabulary for
dictation.
2. For the students
a. The students should be more seriously studying English vocabulary.
b. They should be familiar with using English vocabulary trough dictation in
order to apply it correctly.
c. They should practice English vocabulary by themselves without teacher.
d. They should be more diligently studying English vocabulary.
