Analyzing of the students’ errors pronounciation in producing dental fricative consonants made by the eighth grade of SMPN 1 Palakka

This research is about analyzing of the students’ errors pronounciation in
producing dental fricative consonants made by the eighth grade of SMPN 1 Palakka
in the Academic Year 2019/2020. Most of the students may have problems to
pronounce English dental fricative consonants, although they get an English subject
in their school and they can not master the English pronunciation well. Therefore, the
students often make errors.
The problems of this research are what the students’ errors make in
pronouncing dental fricative consonants sound and what the factors cause students
produce errors in pronouncing dental fricative consonants sound. The objectives of
the research are to analyze students’ errors pronunciation in producing dental
fricative consonants sound and to find out about the students factors make error
pronunciation in producing dental fricative consonants sound. This research used
qualitative descriptive. The researcher used purposive sampling technique. There
were 18 students as respondent. The instrument used in this research were a test,
interview and audio recorder. In analyzing the data, the researcher used error analysis
procedure; identifying the error and describing the error.
The result shows that the students get difficulties to pronounce dental
fricative consonants in all position, they are /ð/ and /θ/. Additionally, most of students
unable to distinguish voiced and voiceless of dental fricative consonant sound. The
students also perform three types of error; subtitution, insertion and omission. Based
on these results, it can be stated that the students of eighth grade in SMPN 1 Palakka
have not mastered the pronunciation of English language yet because most of them
are still influenced by their first language pronunciation system and lack of
knowledge of correct pronunciation.
A. Conclusion
Based on research findings and discussion, this research is aimed to analyze
the errors made by students of the eight grade students of SMPN 1 Palakka in the
academic year 2019/2020 in pronouncing English dental fricative consonant and also
to find out the factors why these errors happen/occur.
Based on the findings and discussion, the result of this research, the
researcher gives conclusions most of the students are unable to distinguish
pronunciation between /ð/ and /θ/ sound, especially in the initial, medial position and
final position. The main factor is because in Indonesia nothing /ð/ and /θ/ sounds only
/t/ and /d/ sounds. That’s why the students can not produce the sound in the good
pronunciation.
Based on the students’ interview, the researcher gets the data that most of the
students have some difficulties when they pronounce dental fricative consonants
sound. The students have difficulties to make correct pronunciation of English word
and they do not know what the meaning of the word, the students’ tendency to
pronounce the word the way it is spelled, the students’ inability to recognize the
words and get difficulties to pronounce the new sounds.
B. Suggestion
Based on the result of the research, the researcher would like to give some
suggestions which hopefully will give valuable and useful contribution to the teachers
and students in English pronunciations, especially in pronouncing dental fricative
consonant.
1. For the English teacher
a. Give more practice in speaking English to their students in order to make
them more fluent in speaking.
b. Give more drills and practice to the students’ in pronouncing
c. Be careful in providing and selecting pronunciation materials to improve their
students’ ability in pronuoncing english words.
2. For the Students
a. Have good self awareness in motivating themselves to pronounce English
words correctly.
b. Look up the dictionary if they find some new vocabularies and try to
pronounce it.
c. Give more attention to vocabulary, grammar, and pronunciation since
learning English concern all of these skills.
3. For the other researcher
a. The researcher wishes this thesis can help another researcher to analyze
English dental fricative consonant, this research can be a reference for the
next observation.
b. The researcher realized that this thesis is far from beings complete, therefore
criticism and corrections for the improvement of this research.
