Differentiating the Vowel and Consonant Sounds to Improve Students’ Pronunciation in the Eleventh Grade of Senior High School Athirah Bone

The main element of language proficiency is obtaining acceptable
pronunciation. Pronunciation is taking great consideration because of appropriate
pronunciation can succeed oral communication. Therefore, this thesis centralizes on
pronunciation, particularly in –ed ending pronunciation. For that reason, the objective
of this research is able to know the improvement of students’ –ed ending
pronunciation after being taught vowel and consonant materials.
This research is analyzed in quantitative approach with pre-experimental
design. This research takes place in Senior High school Athirah Bone in the eleventh
grade. The researcher uses random sample to take 20 students as sample. In analyzing
data, the research uses Audacity Software.
The result of this research shows that the students’ –ed ending pronunciation
got improvement. The mean score of post test (69,80) is higher that the mean score of
pre test (27,95). In addition the score of T –test (16,160) is higher that the score of T-
table (1,729). Definitely, differentiating vowel and consonant sound becomes
effectual materials in learning –ed ending pronunciation.
A. Conclusion
Differentiating the vowel and consonant sounds can improve students’ –ed
ending pronunciation. It is proven by the data of students’ score both in pre test
and post test. The students’ mean score in post test (69,80) is higher than the
mean score of pre test (27,95). After giving vowel and consonant materials as
treatment, the students –ed ending pronunciation got improvement. So, it can be
concluded that differentiating the vowel and consonant sounds improve students’
–ed ending pronunciation in the eleventh grade of Senior High School Athirah
Bone.
B. Suggestion
In fact, applying vowel and consonant materials in teaching pronunciation
have been proven being more effective. So, the researcher would like to give
some suggestions as follows:
1. The English teacher should be creative in managing the material that should
be integrated into classroom.
2. The English teacher should take more consideration in mastering the sounds
system of English.
3. The English teacher should apply vowel and consonant materials in teaching –
ed ending pronunciation.
4. The English teacher should take more time in teaching pronunciation.
