The Relationship between Students’ Motivation and Achievement in Learning English at SMPN 9 Watampone

This thesis presented research about The Relationship between Students’
Motivation and Achievement in Learning English at SMPN 9 Watampone. This
research is purposed to find out the relationship between students’ motivation and
achievement in learning English at SMPN 9 Watampone.
This research used quantitative method. The sample consisted of 32 students
of Eight grade of SMPN 9 Watampone. Based on the aim above, the researcher formulated the research correlational study. The students’ motivation score was obtained from the students after they filled out the questionnaire about it. The questionnaire consists of 20 items. This
questionnaire was formulated based description about motivated learner. For the
students’ English learning score, the researcher got it through documentation from the
English teacher. This English learning score is obtained from the students’ midterm
report. In the technique of data analysis, the researcher used Pearson Product Moment
in the program SPSS 21. The result from the calculation the value is 0.826. Then the researcher
compared it with r table at the significant degree 5% (0.349), the relationship between
students’ motivation and achievement in learning English is positive (r xy : r table =
0.826 ˃ 0.349). So, the alternative hypothesis which states that “r xy ˂ r table means that
there is correlation between students’ motivation and achievement” is accepted.
A. Conclusion
As mentioned before in the previous chapter, motivation is one of the
important things in learning process. The motivation can help someone achieve his or
her goals if they have strong motivation in doing steps to achieve it. So the students
and the teachers need to know about it. In order to prove the assumptions, the
researcher did this study.
Based on the description of data in the previous chapter that has been
described, it can be concluded that null hypothesis is rejected and one hypothesis is
accepted. It can be seen theat r xy is 0.826 then the result from r table in 5% significant
level is r xy ˃ r table ; 0.826 ˃ 0.349. It means that the researcher gets conclusion for the
study that is correlation between students’ motivation and achievement in learning
English at SMPN 9 Watampone.
B. Suggestion
Based on the correlation finding, the researcher would like to offer several
suggestions:
For the English teacher, it is expected to improve their students’ motivation in
earning English because motivated students will concentrate on teaching and
learning process more than those who are not and they will enjoy studying given
bythe teacher. Besides, the teacher should always encourage the students to master
English because the English language is a tool to achieve their success in the future.
Secondly for students, they are expected to increase their motivation in
studying English. They are also expected to be more aware that English is very
important in their life. Thirdly, for the researchers who are interested in conducting
similar study, they can use this finding as references for their research. Finally, for
the English education department, it is also suggested that it is necessary to motivate
the students through various programmers and workshops which are designed to
motivate the student in studying.
